In my family, Thanksgiving was a big deal. Cousins, aunts and uncles, great-aunts and great-uncles and more would all gather at Grandma and Grandpa’s house which smelled like turkey, gravy and stuffing, with a hint of apple and pumpkin pie. The 20-so of us would gather around the large table in the basement, which served its purpose well. Occasionally, on a “big” year, the kids would eat at tables in the other room. There was a clear sense of thankfulness in the air; thankfulness for family, for food, for friendship, for time together. Yes, in...

8 years ago The Commoner Dec. 7, 1888 A stray shot narrowly missed a deadly aim last Thursday afternoon. Mrs. Eliza Johnson had been visiting that day with her daughter, Mrs. William Webster, at the head of Canyon Street gulch, and about four o’clock in the afternoon stepped out on the porch of the house to return to her home, when a stray rifle ball came whizzing by, plowing itself through the fleshy part of one of the lady’s limbs, below the knee. The wound thus inflicted is not a serious one, but it might have been. It behooves all who... Full story
Editor’s Note: The following column was originally published in 2009. Readers of this column know that I am highly critical of the government giving away vast sums of money to scientists who conduct studies about unimportant things when the money would be much better spent funding newspaper columnists who write articles about unimportant things. For example, I think it was a waste of money to spend $1.2 million to study the breeding preferences of the woodchuck. Turns out they mostly prefer to breed with other woodchucks. Shouldn’t we ins...

Washington State Insurance Commissioner Mike Kreidler made national news when he quickly rejected President Obama’s call for insurers to extend individual health insurance policies cancelled because of the Affordable Care Act (ACA), also referred to as Obamacare. While five million insurance policies have been cancelled to date, the Obama administration estimated that as many as 18 million of these policies will be cancelled because of the ACA. Here in Washington state, some 290,000 people have already received cancellation notices. While K...
Let’s face it — too much of the coverage we provide from Washington is “inside baseball,” easily ignored by those who live in the real world. Sometimes, though, this stuff matters. A case in point is the decision by Harry Reid and his Democratic gaggle to invoke the “nuclear option.” It’s called that because Reid and his partisan majority blew up the traditional filibuster. Utilizing a parliamentary maneuver, they were able to circumvent the usual two-thirds vote necessary to change the rules and used a simple majority to do away with the bigg...
Billions of dollars are spent on on-line buys. Last Monday—Cyber Monday—set records for the volume of sales. And, it isn’t just one day a year that on-line sales are enormous. It is every day of the year. Each year the volume grows as more and more consumers go shopping electronically. A variety of reasons have prompted shoppers to go to the web. One compelling reason is that web purchases are most often perceived as tax exempt. Many purchases are not charged a sales tax. Although buyers are supposed to report the tax savings on their own a...
It began with each team standing in a line across from each other for the announcer’s player introductions. For a state 1B semifinal football game at Edgar Brown Stadium in Pasco last Saturday night, Touchet’s team stretched doubly far across the turf than did Rosalia. When the game began, the numbers shifted in favor of the Spartans as the scoreboard showed 30-6 Rosalia in a frenzied second quarter. With the Touchet crowd muted, however, nearing halftime the Indians came back to within 30-20. T...
Colfax football coaches and players wrapped up the season with parents and fans at a dessert banquet Monday night. The Bulldogs honored four seniors and presented team awards and letters. Coach Mike Morgan credited the four seniors with providing strong leadership over the year to the younger players. That was one of the factors that advanced the team to the state quarter-final round in spite of its overall young profile. “This is a team that just never quit. A 6-5 record looks pretty good b...
