    Local organizations are gearing up to make the holiday season brighter. Most report that because of the economy, there’s more of a demand for their services. Either gifts or cash donations are appreciated. Firefighter’s Toy Box The Firefighter’s Toy Box Drive serves not only Colfax children but kids all over the county. “We’re reaching out to every family from Colton and Uniontown to Hay and LaCrosse,” said Ken McNaughton, one of the organizers.   • Judge rejects plea revival: Third Daniel Lazcano trial begins in Spokane County

    The third murder trial for Daniel Lazcano started Monday in Spokane with a ruling on a motion by Lazcano’s attorneys to place a plea bargain agreement back on the docket. Superior Court Judge Maryann Moreno, who is presiding over Lazcano’s third trial, rejected the motion according to a report Tuesday by William Spence who is covering the trial for the Lewiston Morning Tribune.   • Palouse Cares volunteers to collect donations Dec. 7

    Palouse Cares Food Drive will start Saturday, Dec. 7, at 9 a.m. At least 50 volunteers are needed to go door-to-door to collect food. The goal is to get 2,500 pounds of food and $2,500 for the Colfax segment of the food drive. The Palouse Cares Food Drive is the biggest single-day food drive on the Palouse. Colfax volunteers will gather at Rosauers and start going door-to-door. A silent auction table at Rosauers invites residents to bid on items donated by area businesses.   • Railroad cars depart dormant zone

    An engine crew on Nov. 26 hooked up this line of freight cars which had been left on the tracks along the S. Palouse River channel in Colfax. The Golden West Service boxcars had been left on the rail line for several weeks. Presence of the freight cars along the channel was the first railroad activity on that section of the line in years.   • Colton ‘Christkindlmarkt’ to bring Old World tradition

    A tradition from the old world is coming to Colton for Christmas. The first annual “Christkindlmarkt” will take place Dec. 15, put on by the new Colton Community Association.   • Hospital remodeling aims at energy efficiency

    Whitman Hospital and Medical Center is going through a $6.5 million remodeling project that includes revamping the heating and cooling systems making them more energy efficient. According to Jim Heilsberg, hospital Chief Financial Officer, the project is remodeling the “guts” of the building. “We saw a need to refresh the building for functionality,” Heilsberg explained.     Colfax The Whitman County Library in Colfax is expecting a special visitor Thursday, Dec. 5, from 3 to 5:30 p.m. Santa will visit and pictures will be available. The Lighted Christmas Parade sponsored by the Colfax Chamber of Commerce is Thursday evening starting at 6 p.m. The parade will start at Rosauers and go along Mill Street.     Whitman County Commissioners on Monday morning notified county department heads about cuts in the budget, resulting in the loss of one sheriff’s deputy and possibly more employees throughout county offices. Commissioners wanted a sustainable budget and county finance directors shaved about seven percent more off the general fund budget to bring it within a projected $13.1 million.     Snow, chilly temperatures and cold winds from the northwest greeted Whitman County residents on Tuesday morning. David Jones, Natural Resources Conservation Service Soil Conservationist based in Colfax, said he measured about an inch of snowfall on Tuesday.
