    Nathan Holbrook of Palouse has been named athletic director for Colfax High School. A 2003 graduate of Garfield/Palouse High School, Holbrook is now completing a bachelors degree program on-line from the University of California at Irvine. After high school he played basketball at Walla Walla Community College and then earned a master’s degree in exercise science at Eastern Washington University.   • Bulldog wrestlers place fourth at tourney

    Colfax wrestlers placed fourth Saturday with 103 points in the Davenport tournament which drew wrestlers from 14 teams. Kittitas topped the meet with 123. Reardan booked the top score for NE entrants with a 117 for second place. The Bulldogs finished a half point behind Newport which booked 103.5 for third place. First-place winners for the Bulldogs were Ray Compton at 195, Evan Lord at 220 and Nick McAdams at 285. McAdams wrestled in the unlimited class although his weight was considerably less.   • Bulldog volleyball wraps double title season

    Colfax volleyball players ended the championship season by honoring four departing seniors and recalling a net season which probably rates at the top of all Colfax campaigns. Coach Sue Doering noted the 36-1 campaign to the state title this year rated at the top for her years at the helm of the Bulldogs. Doering also pointed out the 97-8 mark in game wins.     Colfax girls started the winter’s basketball campaign with a split over the weekend. They rolled past an experienced St. John/Endicott team 62-30 Friday night on the home court and then sustained a 20-point defeat when they went up against LaSalle of Union Gap at the SunDome. The Bulldogs graduated three seniors off the team which rolled out a 23-6 record last year and came within a win of the final eight show at Spokane.     The Colfax boys started the new basketball season with a split over the weekend. The Bulldogs cranked up the campaign for the new season after graduating five seniors last year. Coach Reece Jenkin and crew start the season with a lineup of players who picked up some experience from the Bulldog power teams that won the state 2B title two years ago and placed second last March in an all-NE title game with Northwest Christian.   • Palouse Cares food drive

    With a bitter north wind blowing and temperatures hovering barely above zero on Saturday morning, 50 volunteers went door-to-door to collect food for the Palouse Cares Food Drive. The volunteers collected 1,839 pounds of food. Through the silent auction and financial donations, including a $500 contribution from Palouse Cares to the Colfax Food Bank, $1,276 was raised.     No tags are left on the Post Office Giving Tree, but tags are still on the US Bank tree. Deadline to get gifts back to the Giving Tree locations is Dec. 17. Cash donations also can be made to the Giving Tree Fund at Sterling Savings. Wrapped gifts are acceptable, but the tag must be attached to the gift.   • Garfield duo will make Utah garbage truck run

    The town of Garfield has bought a used garbage truck from Salt Lake City. With the purchase approved at the Nov. 20 city council meeting, the question then became how to get the truck to Garfield. In discussion, the council decided to look into the cost of shipping it compared to the mayor and public works superintendent going down there to drive it back.     With the recent below-zero temperatures the winter wheat crop could suffer some losses because of the absence of snow cover.     Dennis and Jan Moore own four saddle horses that graze on their 40 acres of land near Hay. Earlier this fall, the state Department of Ecology sent them a letter saying that those four horses have the potential to pollute Big Alkali Creek that runs through part of their property.   • Volunteers battle fire in cold at Endicott

    A fire gutted the residence of Larry Persons late Saturday afternoon in Endicott. Volunteer firefighters were called out in the three-degree weather to douse the fire. Fire crews from Colfax, St. John and Steptoe all responded to the scene. When the first crews arrived at the scene smoke and flames were coming from the house.
