Friends and former neighbors here have learned of the death of Cliff Amick, 97, former manager of Almota Elevator Co., last Feb. 17 in Mesa, Ariz., where he had made a retirement home. Mr. Amick. who also served on the Colfax City Council, managed Almota Elevator Co. from 1973 until 1980. He was preceded in death by his wife, Margaret. The Amicks moved here from Walla Walla and returned there after he retired. They later traveled extensively in their motor home.... Full story

Railway display open for holiday Members of the Latah Railway club will have their toy trains open for their annual Christmas display Saturday, Dec. 13, from 10 to 3 p.m. in the train room at the Latah County Fairground in Moscow. The display includes HO scale, G scale and N scale toy trains in the train room which is undergoing remodeling. Pam Becker has spent all but about four years of her life in Colfax. The daughter of Bill and Evelyn Closson, she grew up on the family farm. Her brother, Dr. Bill Closson, came back to Colfax after graduating from WSU, followed by the University of Washington Medical School, to help recruit young doctors to Colfax. Two hearing sites have been scheduled for the proposal to use motor vehicles on Washington State Parks long-distance trails, including the Columbia Plateau Trail and the John Wayne Trail in Whitman County. A draft proposal calls for use of the trails by adjoining property owners under a fee system, according to Nikki Fields, coordinator for the trails system. The City of Tekoa has adjusted its dumpster-rental policy in an effort to lessen the risk of losing money on the endeavor. The new policy, which affects residential use, requires residents to pay before a dumpster is delivered from Empire Disposal. Voting to amend Ordinance 817 on Nov. 17, the city council approved the change. Rioters in Ferguson, Missouri shattered the windows of Natalie’s Cakes and More and vandalized the baking equipment. However, when owner Natalie Dubose put her story on the internet, Americans immediately responded, donating more than $260,000 to help her rebuild her business. The White House response to Ferguson wouldn’t be complete without a meeting with Al Sharpton, the infamous agitator who has become President Barack Obama’s “go-to man on race,” in the words of a Politico headline from last August.
