  • New era for Colton girls

    Garth Meyer, Gazette Reporter|Dec 12, 2019

The newest of a new season has begun for Colton girls basketball, with just one returning starter for the Wildcats, coming off their tenth state 1B championship in 11 years. Coach Clark Vining again leads the team, in his 15th season, with an overall record of 338-40. Gone is the three-player core that made an impact as freshmen and starred since: guards Dakota Patchen and Jordyn Moehrle and forward Emily Schultheis. With them was post Abby Kelly, a two-year starter and another 2019 graduate....

    Garth Meyer, Gazette Reporter|Dec 12, 2019

Down by a point Tuesday night with less than 20 seconds to go, Oakesdale had three attempts near the basket but could not get a last shot to fall against Lind/Ritzville/Sprague. Oakesdale then fouled with .04 remaining. The foul was ruled intentional, giving four free throws to the Broncos, with possession. The shooter made one for a final score of 49-47 LRS. Freshman wing Jessie Reed led the Nighthawks with 14 points and seven rebounds while Lizzy Perry, senior point guard, had 13 points and Ju...

  • Awards wrap Colfax volleyball campaign

    Dec 12, 2019

Credits and awards capped the Colfax volleyball season at an ice cream social Tuesday in the Jennings cafeteria. The social capped the season for a first-year coach and a Bulldog team which finished the season with a return to the state show at the SunDome where they finished in seventh after pegging wins through the consolation bracket. One big footnote to Tuesday's finale was the fact all players at the table will be back to start the campaign next year. Colfax had zero seniors on this years...

  • Past due property tax reminders sent out in county

    Victoria Fowler, Gazette Reporter|Dec 12, 2019

At Monday’s Whitman County commissioner workshop, County Treasurer Chris Nelson gave an update regarding delinquent accounts for this tax season. Delinquent accounts occur when a due date for a tax return has passed and the amount due remains unpaid. “Last week we sent out about 1,500 postcards to folks whose accounts show as delinquent,” Nelson said. “We have been very busy these past few days.” Nelson said thus far they have collected over $60,000 in delinquent taxes from those paying online. Through the Whitman County website, county re...

  • Party Lines

    Dec 12, 2019

Donald Trump is close to being impeached by the House of Representatives. Hearings continued on Monday, but it is almost a forgone conclusion that Articles of Impeachment will be approved in committee by the end of the week and then voted on by the full House next week. The House, of course, is dominated by Democrats. Should the Articles of Impeachment be voted in, then they will go to the Senate. At that point, a “trial” will be conducted in the Senate. The Senate then votes on whether or not the president should be removed from office. The...

  • Our Faltering Social Vitality

    Rich Lowry, National Review Editor|Dec 12, 2019

The economy is in robust good health, but our social fabric isn't. By two basic measures of social vitality, births and deaths, American society is faltering. Both the fertility rate and life expectancy are declining, in a sign that people feel less secure and, in some cases, have no hope at all. We are attuned to headline-grabbing economic statistics -- GDP growth, the unemployment rate, wages -- as monthly and quarterly metrics of American well-being, but they aren't as telling as these more fundamental indicators. To put it bluntly,...

Nigerian Christmas Nigerian Christians celebrate Christmas in special ways. If possible, most return to the village of their ancestors, even those living abroad. Beginning early on Christmas day, goats are brought to slaughter, and then the cooking and feasting begins. Children are all around, and there is a competition among grandmothers as to which “compound” is the noisiest, i.e. has the most people returning for the celebration. The day is spent attending church, feasting, visiting, discussing and arguing various topics including pol...

  • Hydrogen Fuel Cells Gaining Momentum

    Don C. Brunell, Freelance Columnist|Dec 12, 2019

In the coming decade, investors are betting that hydrogen will become a prominent fuel which can eliminate CO2 discharges from the vehicles it energizes. According to the US Energy Information Administration (EIA) the transportation sector has dominated the growth in US carbon dioxide emissions since 1990, accounting for 69 percent of the total increase. It is important that hydrogen technology advances rapidly because cars, trucks and buses are a growing contributor to greenhouse gas buildups...
