    Colfax girls booked two pressure wins over the weekend for a 2-0 start in the NE competition. The first league weekend ended Saturday night at Ritzville when Taylor Garcia iced two toss shots for a 51-49 win to avoid an overtime game. The two shots came in the last half second after LRS launched a charge in the last quarter. "I think an overtime would have not been very good for us," coach Corey Baerlocher commented.     After two derailments in the first weekend of NE play, the Colfax Bulldogs will try to get on track Friday when the team heads to St. George's to play the Dragons. They will go up against a Dragons team which hammered Tekoa-Rosalia in the Saturday night league round 70-33. Colfax was clipped by Liberty 62-54 Friday night on the home court with Lancer junior Chase Burnham finishing with 26 points.     Washington Traffic Safety Commission has joined forces with Uber to encourage patrons to take a safe ride home during the holiday season. In areas where Uber services are available, they will offer riders $20 off their first trip as part of the effort, with the promo code RIDESAFEWA.     Trinity Lutheran Church will be the site of the Dave Ramsey Financial Peace University classes, which include a series of videos featuring Dave Ramsey and some of his top professionals teaching about financial well-being.     A proposal for Pomeroy to assist Garfield with training at its wastewater treatment plant has fallen through, Garfield Mayor Ray McCown was notified Dec. 7.     In the aftermath of two failed levies in Tekoa, one will come up on the ballot in February and one will not. A $50,000 property tax levy for street operation and maintenance in November received 58.6 percent yes votes – short of the 60 percent to pass.     A not-so-familiar sound has been hitting rooftops across the Palouse for the past two weeks, and it is not the sound of Santa and his reindeer (yet). Rain has hit the Palouse, and it has been a much-needed boost for crops. The average rainfall for Colfax in December is 2.93 inches, David Jones at the Colfax NRCS office said.     Garfield mayor Ray McCown has brought back pay to the city council and mayor position after three years of the representatives voluntarily serving without pay. “For the last few years, we've just waived our wages,” said McCown. “I feel like we've got two, three council members that could use it.” At the Dec. 2 city council meeting, McCown introduced resolution 2015-07, setting salary schedules for public officials and employees of the town of Garfield.     Sixth graders from Jennings School Tuesday delivered food collected in the school food drive to the Colfax Food Pantry. The food donations were collected at the school during a week-long food drive. They were loaded in a Coast van at the school, and the sixth graders were shuttled down to the Pantry in a bus to unload the cargo.     The collapsed wall at the Palouse Arms building is being demolished. The wall was built in 1920 and fell unexpectedly last month. A part of a building is in the process of coming down in Palouse after a wall collapsed on the former Palouse Arms Apartments.     Following two fatal car accidents involving WSU students prior to Thanksgiving, parents have been calling for improved roads in Whitman County, and WSU Interim President Dan Bernardo added his voice last Thursday. Christine Hunter, 18, Spokane, and Morgan Cope, 20, Buckley, were killed in separate accidents after vehicles crossed the center line.
