The Colfax wrestling team Saturday advanced four wrestlers to the final round of the Liberty tournament at Spangle. The Bulldogs had six wrestlers compete at Liberty. Colfax girls opened the league run with two power wins over the weekend. They dropped Davenport 49-30 on the road Friday night and then crunched St. Georges in the NE opener on the home court Saturday. After 70 years of having an office rent free, the Whitman Conservation District must move, according to a new policy from the Natural Resources Conservation Service. According to conservation board member Jan Turney, the district has known about the possibility of a move for a couple of years. During Friday’s meeting, Whitman County Library Board of Trustees voted to place a library maintenance and operation levy restoration election on the Feb. 11 ballot. Restoring the levy rate allows the library to maintain existing hours, collections, technology, programs and staffing levels in all 14 county locations. The Best Western Wheatland Inn in Colfax still is cleaning up after a water pipe broke above the entrance last Sunday. According to one of the inn’s employees, a water pipe in the ceiling froze then broke above the entry door. The pipe ran to the breakfast area, with water gushing through the light fixtures. Whitman County commissioners decided to ask voters to raise property taxes beginning in 2015 to ease budget woes. After a long discussion Monday morning during a workshop, commissioners met again Monday afternoon and voted unanimously to ask voters to hike property taxes from $1.38 to $1.60 per $1,000 of assessed value starting in 2015. Voters will cast their decisions in February. The state limit from the county general fund levy is $1.80. The added tax would raise more than $750,000 in 2015. Endicott fire crews Thursday responded to another long fire battle with the report of a house fire on the Jordan-Knott Road west of Winona. The fire, which was at the Charmain Despain place, was reported at 2:43 p.m. Endicott Chief Randall Schmick said the fire destroyed the house which was made of logs. They were extremely difficult to extinguish. He said at one point fire crews had to cut through the wall to get access to the burning logs. Despain was not at home at the time the fire started.
