Even as they struggle to meet the terms of a contract negotiated with the Whitman County Deputies Association, county commissioners Monday renewed their relationship with G. Andrew Hunt and Associates, a Spokane firm the county employs in contract negotiations. The one-year deal pays the Hunt firm $70 per hour for the first 145 hours of negotiating, research and travel and $75 per hour beyond the 1imit. “I think they’ve done an excellent job,” Commissioner Greg Partch commented on the firm’s previous work. Retiring Whitman Hospital administrator Jon Davis hugs Audie Guidi, dietary manager, at his retirement party at the hospital Dec. 18. Davis served as administrator for seven years. Taking his place is Dave Womack, an administrator from Greenville, Ill. Davis will be on call with the hospital until Dec. 31, when he officially retires. Yakima Canutt book relates wrangler days A new book about Yakima Canutt, Penawawa area native who earned fame as a national rodeo champion and went on to a career as a Hollywood stunt director, has been released. Titled “My Rodeo Years,” the book was published by McFarland & Co., in Jefferson, N.C. Dusty One Dusty family traveled Dec. 20 to the Tucannon campground for Christmas trees. Luke, Jennifer, Myshala and Quincy Morris, Keith and Sally Morris and Bridgett and Chad Hocutt and Hope and Miriam of Spokane, went to the Tucannon campground to cut three Christmas trees. Lamont Diane Cook returned home Tuesday after spending three days in Norfolk, Va., as guest of her brother and sister-in-law, Ed and Ilene Dickinson. In 1998, Linda Marler and her husband, Martin, were invited to a meeting for the Whitman Hospital Foundation. The foundation was looking for people interested in helping reach its goal of securing a rainy day fund for the hospital. Linda, during her life, had already seen the hospital turn around from a struggling entity to a successful establishment. “If we wanted to keep that going, we needed people to get involved,” she said. Master Gardeners are trained community volunteers who provide science-based information on horticulture and environmentally sound gardening practices. Colfax High School grad Hal (Babe) Lyons was included in a feature series of World War II veterans which is running in the Desert Sun at Palm Springs, Calif., through the end of the year. Lyons, who scored the lone touchdown in the Colfax-St. John Codger Bowl game in 1988, now resides in La Quinta, Calif. Lyons graduated from Colfax High School with the class of 1941 and enlisted in 1942 with other members of his class. Colfax led the way in a regional increase in pumping groundwater from the aquifers beneath the Palouse during the irrigation season. Pumping figures were reported for Colfax, Palouse, Moscow, Pullman, the University of Idaho and Washington State University. All pumping entities used 1.7 percent more water in 2009. Data came from pumping records of April through September, typically the highest irrigation months of the year. A report was given at a meeting of the Palouse Basin Aquifer Committee Friday.
