  • Attorney says deputies too involved in Pullman

    Joe Smillie, Gazette Reporter|Dec 24, 2009

Pullman Attorney Timothy Esser wrote county commissioners that Sheriff Brett Myers could withstand a cut that would reduce the number of deputies on the county payroll. In countering Esser’s assertion during Monday’s public hearing on the budget, Sheriff Myers entered into the record past correspondence between him and Esser in which Esser questioned the role that Myers’ Mormon faith has played in deputies beginning to patrol the WSU campus. Because of that, Myers urged commissioners to “give zero weight to Mr. Esser.” “I have never allowed my...

    Jeslyn Lemke, Gazette Reporter|Dec 24, 2009

Colfax school district enrollment is 11.19 students under projections for this year’s enrollment, a gap that will likely lose the district roughly $60,000 in state funding over the year. The loss of students comes during a particularly difficult financial year for the district, which is already coping with a steep loss in state funding like most districts in Whitman County. Supt. Michael Morgan told the Gazette Tuesday he is concerned about the loss of students, but the bigger concern for the district is the state legislature cutting further s...

  • Sheriff’s budget causes friction before deadline

    Joe Smillie, Gazette Reporter|Dec 24, 2009

The 2010 budget for Sheriff Brett Myers’ office was the sole sticking point among county commissioners Monday, following their second and final public hearing on the county’s nearly $53 million 2010 budget. Myers has proposed a budget of $2,947,731. Anything less than that, he said, would likely result in one less deputy on his force. “My budget to begin 2010 is going to be lower than my 2009 beginning budget when you factor in COLAs and medical increases,” Myers said Monday. “More than likely, it will impact the level of staffing I have.” Myer...
