  • Lawhead returns home to head Empire Disposal

    Garth Meyer, Gazette Reporter|Dec 25, 2014

It started as a 10-year learning plan with his mother and father to take over the family business. It lasted two years, until Frank Lawhead was killed in an accident on the job Nov. 12, 2002. Aaron Lawhead, his then 26-year-old son, was thrust into taking over Empire Disposal, based in Colfax. The upheaval was part of a journey that included the sale of the business, Lawhead’s return to Arizona where he went to college, and his later second return to Colfax with a wife and two children. He moved...

  • My favorite recipes: England Antiques

    Dec 25, 2014

England has been a great source of antiques for generations of Americans. US military personnel have often been knowledgeable buyers since they have the time to get acquainted with the market, and they are able to have antiques shipped to the US when they move if they do not exceed the weight limit assigned by the military. Since many British people grew up with antiques, they are perhaps not so fond of them as Americans. According to British HGTV, the stylish option is to have a home with...

  • Savvy Senior

    Dec 25, 2014

Dear Savvy Senior, How does one go about appealing Medicare when they won’t pay for something that has been covered in the past? Denied Senior Dear Denied, If you disagree with a coverage or payment decision made by Medicare, you can appeal, and you’ll be happy to know that around half of all appeals are successful, so it’s definitely worth your time. But before going that route, talk with the doctor, hospital and Medicare to see if you can spot the problem and resubmit the claim. Some denials are caused by simple billing code errors by the d...

Editor's Note: The following column was originally published in 2010. I have a problem with my spam filter: It sometimes blocks e-mails from Nigerian bankers who want to transfer large sums of money to my checking account, from people who are willing to give me access to dangerous narcotics and from scantily clad women selling drugs designed to make me more of a man. (By "more of a man," I'm not saying the drugs would make me even more likely to leave the toilet seat up or to refuse to ask for directions. I'm saying the pills would enhance my... Full story

8 years ago The Commoner Dec. 27, 1889 The contractors who are to construct the new iron bridge across the South Palouse River, at the south end of Main Street, are in the city, and will commence work at once. The piers, etc., of the new bridge are at the depot. About three inches more of snow fell on Saturday night and sleighing was never better than at present. Sunday and Christmas were spent by a great many of our people in sleigh riding and every available sleigh and cutter in the city was in use. A jolly crowd of young people from...

    Dec 25, 2014

It’s that time of year when we count our blessings. In America, they are abundant, especially this year. For starters, the unemployment rate is down from 7 percent last December to 5.8 percent. Washington State mirrors the national average. Housing starts, retail sales and our gross domestic product are all up from last year, signs of an improving economy. Since consumer spending drives economic growth, low interest rates have helped. Home mortgages and auto loans hover in the 3 to 4 percent range. Contrast that to Russia, where interest r...

  • Gordon Forgey

    Dec 25, 2014

More than a hundred years ago, a young girl wanted to know if Santa really existed. Her friends were telling her Santa Claus was not real. So, she wrote her newspaper to get the truth. This is the famous reply from the editor, Francis Church. Virginia, your little friends are wrong. They have been afflicted by skepticism in a skeptical age. They do not believe except they see. They think that nothing can be which is not comprehensible by their little minds. All minds, Virginia, whether they be men’s or children’s are little. In this great uni... Full story

  • Rich Lowry

    Dec 25, 2014

The Senate Intelligence Committee spent roughly $50 million on its investigation into the CIA and apparently couldn’t find Michael Hayden’s phone number. The committee portrays Gen. Hayden, the former CIA director, as a liar who deceived Congress about the agency’s interrogation program, yet the committee couldn’t be bothered to interview him. That’s because the committee, led by California Democrat Dianne Feinstein, didn’t bother to interview anyone. The committee didn’t want to include anything that might significantly complicate it...

Enhanced interrogation techniques, or even worse, EITs — why can’t they just say “torture” as the apologists try to pretend that the CIA and our post-9/11 leaders didn’t shame America? Instead, they come up with sterile terms to describe their monstrous policies. Another one is the term that two psychologists created to describe the state of mind they wanted from U.S. captives subjected to that torture: “learned helplessness.” The intent of their brutal interrogation tactics was to create a belief by prisoners that it was pointless to...
