  • One more year for Martin Hall

    Martin Hall Juvenile Detention Center in Medical Lake will be open for one more year. After the Martin Hall board which represents eight counties approved a budget for the center a couple of weeks ago, the board met Dec. 18 to approve going forward under the original interlocal agreement, according to Whitman County Commissioner Art Swannack who represents Whitman County on the board. Rates will be at $155 per bed per day, staying at the same rate. For non members, the rate increased from $185 per bed per day to $200 per bed per day. Whitman...

  • Mini-storage approved for Palouse

    The Palouse Board of Adjustment has given its approval to a new mini-storage to be built on Main Street. The 24-unit S & M Storage facility will be its third location, joining the original in Potlatch and a second one which opened in Garfield four years ago. Owners Mike Boller and Steve Wolheter of Potlatch bought two lots in Palouse in 2013 from Bud Bagott, the owner of Bagott Motors, who once used the area as a used car lot.     Colfax and Garfield/Palouse wrestlers compiled a 14-8 record Dec. 16 in a league meet at Tri Cities Prep in Pasco. Reggie Jones, Brain DeYoung and Nick McAdams all took two wins for Colfax. Trapper Askins and Travis Knauff of Garfield/Palouse each booked a pair of wins. The wrestling squad was slated to compete in the Tri-County tournament Tuesday at Central Valley.   • Bafus, Lothspeich honored

    Shirley Bafus and Robert Lothspeich were honored Monday at a reception in the commissioners’ room of the courthouse. Bafus is concluding a 31-year career as the superior court clerk. She has been employed at the courthouse for a total of 42 years with the first 10 years as an employee in the treasurer’s office.     The Uniontown Community Development Association’s Vollmer Building is fully rented for coming years. After a two-year restoration and remodeling project, the UCDA has signed Wawawai Canyon Winery to a five-year lease for the storefront space.     Erik Binks is not quite two years old and is fighting for his life. Last April he was diagnosed with a deadly cancer, neuroblastoma. His mother, Cheryl Binks, said she noticed that Erik was trying to walk, but he stumbled. He had a fever and was not eating or drinking. At first doctors thought it was pneumonia, but they said it could also be a tumor.   • Farmers, land owners attend sessions on water quality

    Whitman County farmers and landowners are taking proactive approaches to manage water quality. Two recent workshops, one in LaCrosse and one in Pullman, were in response to Department of Ecology meetings, letters and visits on land last spring.   • Palouse approves revised poultry ordinance

    A new Palouse poultry code has been set. After four years of overall work on the matter, the Palouse city council Dec. 9 voted unanimously to approve an amendment of Ordinance No. 928 regarding chickens and other birds. The original code – part of the Palouse Municipal Code (PMC) – was written in 1919.   • Railroad, state 'rescue' 34 freight cars at Colfax

    Railroad service on the east side of Main Street resumed for a short time Monday morning when railroad crews and state Department of Transportation crews worked to remove 34 stranded freight cars which were parked on the N. Clay spur line. The operation included clearing the tracks of a paving layer on the N. Main crossing which left the railroad cars isolated.
