    Joe Smillie|Dec 31, 2009

Jim Allenbach rolls a tire through Whitman County’s Colfax shop Tuesday afternoon. A relatively snow-free December has given Whitman County road crews a chance to catch up on two years of deferred maintenance. Record snowfall in 2008 and 2009 kept workers in the county’s Public Works department on snow plows for 12 hours a day for weeks at a time. This year, crews have not had to log overtime hours. “I prayed for a brown Christmas, and I got it,” said Mark Storey, director of the public works department. “Santa was a very good man this year.” S... Full story

The state’s Innovation Partnership Zone program made $1.5 million of grant funding available this year, and the port sought a chunk of that cash to pay for the infrastructure. The grant would have paved the way for development next year. Now port officials have to look into other funding options. Port Director Joe P...

  • What a difference a year makes!

    Dec 31, 2009

Identical southward views of Main Street Colfax show the stark difference a year can make. At left is Main Street at the end of 2009, showing pavement left bare by the thus-far mild winter weather. Contrasting is the picture at right, showing Main Street traffic gnarled as a gigantic snow berm in the middle of the street narrowed traffic to one lane in each direction. Road crews logged weeks of consecutive 12-hour days to keep roads passable across the county last year. This year’s mild weather has kept those crews in the shop, catching up o... Full story

    Dec 31, 2009

8 years ago, Jan. 9, 1885 At their session last week the county commissioners transacted very little business besides the approval of the bonds of the new officers and the payment of bills.
