Lazcano A Spokane county jury’s guilty verdict Dec. 18 following the third murder trial of Daniel Lazcano ended a series of four murder trials. In a county where murder trials don’t happen every year, the four-trial run for the Lazano brothers was unprecedented. The Lazcanos were arrested after the body of their victim, Marcus Schur, was found in the outlet creek of Bonnie Lake in March of 2012. The case advanced when the murder weapon, an AK-47 rifle, was found in the Spokane River under T.J. Meenach Bridge that September. The third trial for...

  • Good old days

8 years ago The Commoner Jan. 4, 1889 The Colfax creamery building is well underway and construction work is rapidly increasing. The building will be sufficiently commodious for the manufacture of a large amount of creamery products. The location, however, does not meet with the approbation of some of the stockholders. On Monday evening at the residence of Mr. and Mrs. Fullerton, 12 couples of young people were assembled to watch the old year out. It is needless to say that the occasion was enjoyed by all present. The report of the holiday...

    Dec 31, 2013

This is the time of year when people start to make promises to themselves. Promises that they, individually, will be better. That they will change and life will be different. Personally, I am of mixed opinions regarding New Year’s resolutions. On the one hand, the idea is great. All a person has to do is set a goal to change, make the change, and then maintain that change until it becomes the new “normal” pattern of behavior. It’s a great theory. Sometimes it works, but most often it doesn’t and we end up exactly–or nearly exactly–right back at...

This is first of two reports Linda Marler, the Gazette recipe columnist, plans to make on their trip to Wales to visit a daughter and family over the holidays. Traveling from East Anglia, the part of England that borders the English Channel and the North Sea, we left strictly agricultural lands to cross the English Midlands. Birmingham and Coventry are busy industrial cities, although there is beautiful farmland there, too. Coventry was famously firebombed by waves of German bombers during...

Rosalia Proven I would like to say that when Jim Kaufman left as Country Prosecutor I had doubts that anyone could give us, the citizens of Whitman County, the same protection and services which Jim had afforded us. The New Year is traditionally a time for reflection and renewal. A shiny new year lies ahead, full of promise. The New Year is a time when people pledge to change their lives: lose weight, stop smoking, be a better parent, work harder, work less. Regardless of your situation, the New Year holds the opportunity for a fresh start. Our nation needs a fresh start. We are now entering the fifth year of the economic “recovery,” the slowest on record since the Great Depression. While there have been sporadic fits and starts of improved numbers, eco... Full story

There’s a possibility that just a few people are discussing, and it’s that the “Duck Dynasty” family and maybe A&E network have just pulled off a public-relations coup. Granted, my evidence is strictly anecdotal, based on the personal experience of ... well ... me. I had never watched the show before now, but the moment father duck Phil Robertson made his comments to GQ about gays and blacks that are so ridiculous they could only be meant as farce, I made it a point to watch. Folks, it is very funny. Obviously it’s a parody, one that mocks red... Full story

The current Time Magazine has an amazing photograph. It is of a Great White shark breaching out of the water in an attempt to catch a small seal. The shark’s mouth is wide open and its teeth are extended. The seal is not in the shark’s mouth as one might expect, but stretched across its snout as if doing a circus act on a big ball. The little seal evaded the shark’s teeth only to ride its nose high into the air. Many Americans over the last four years have been in a position like that little seal—trying desperately to save their lives in the...
