    A young Colfax boys’ team bowed twice over the weekend at the Avista Holiday tourney at Lewis Clark State College. The Bulldogs were defeated 76-32 by Clarkston in the Friday round and then stopped by Lewiston 56-39 in Saturday’s consolation round. Clarkston, now undefeated at 7-0 on the season, bounced Walla Walla 72-54 in the tournament’s championship round Saturday night.     After booking a split in the Avista Holiday tournament at LCSC in Lewiston over the weekend, the Bulldog girls are now aiming at a collision with Northwest Christian Friday night on the Colfax board. Colfax, which is undefeated in league play, will take a 6-2 record into the battle for the top spot in the new NE race.     Colton beats 3A Shadle Park in Spokane 68-61 Colton and Tekoa/Oakesdale girls upped the ante for Friday’s league collision at Colton with power wins at the end of the holiday break. After their non-leaguer with Kamiah Monday night was called off, Colton hooked up for a game with Shadle Park, rolled to Spokane and defeated the 3A team 68-61.     The West Valley, Utah, garbage truck left a Waste Management lot, passed residential streets, merged onto Interstate 15 and cleared the outskirts of town. Along the east shore of Great Salt Lake, it kept going. Inside was Garfield City Councilman Tim Southern and Public Works Superintendent Robby Johnson.     The Palouse Tavern has closed. In an abrupt turn of events, the longtime bar and grill on the corner of Main Street and Beach closed Dec. 21, after proprietors Bob and Tina Brookshier received an notice to vacate. It was delivered by new owner, Adam Barron, Dec. 4. “He walked in and handed us a letter,” said Bob Brookshier. “One little sentence on it and that was it.” The notice gave them 60 days to vacate the premises which the Brookshiers ran for nine years as Palouse Tavern.   • Commissioners put wrap on budget for this year

    Whitman County commissioners unanimously on Monday approved the 2014 budget but with a bit of reluctance. In a discussion before the meeting, board Chairman Michael Largent said there is no alternative to the budget cuts. “Certain cuts are necessary,” he said. “Department managers will make cuts and that doesn’t necessarily mean employees,” he said.   • Two arrested for burglaries

    Sheriff Brett Myers Monday reported the arrest of two suspects after investigation of a rash of burglaries and break-ins in the northern part of the county over the past few months. The sheriff said deputies have investigated several leads and checked out other suspects in the series of cases. Kenneth L. Himes, 34, was arrested early Sunday morning at his home in Tekoa as a suspect in the burglaries. Lance H.     Two Colfax High School graduates who have pursued careers in teaching were among those named last week for the Presidential Awards for Excellence in mathematics and science. Pamela Beasley-Nolan, who has marked a 30-year career as a teacher at Waitsburg, was named for the science award in Washington. She is now a kindergarten teacher at Waitsburg where she has undertaken several assignments during her career.     Whitman County commissioners Monday morning received notice for an application for a marijuana production and processing site near Endicott. The commissioners decided to do nothing with the application which was relayed from the Washington State Liquor Control Board. Garry Griffiths, whose mailing address is in Pasco, is applying for a license as a marijuana producer and a marijuana processor at Three G Farms at 7205 Endicott Road.   • Upgrade project fails: Flood runoff hits Colfax after highway ditch clogs

    City and state crews were called out Dec. 23 when runoff water jumped the drainage ditch along the Palouse Highway grade descending into Colfax. Melting snow and rain led to an overflow down the drainage ditch which was plugged at one of the newly installed culverts for private entry roads that intersect with the highway on the grade. The water flow went over the top of the entry road and onto the highway.
