Grace was born in Shanghai China to Herman and Mabel Mader who were serving there as missionaries. The family came home to the Colfax, Wash., area in late 1925 and because of political unrest did not return to China. Grace grew up on a farm in the Clear Creek area, attended Clear Creek one room school and Colfax High School graduating in 1938. She worked at the telephone office and at St Ignatius Hospital.
