The Jeffrey Epstein case establishes beyond a doubt that if you're a sexual predator, it pays to be a rich and connected sexual predator. Epstein, now dead of an apparent suicide before his accusers had their day in court, worked the system and benefited from advantages and breaks unimaginable to anyone who didn't jet around with influential friends. The multimillionaire financier who lived in Palm Beach, Fla., and Manhattan, N.Y., used his resources to build a network of sexual predation and then used his resources to escape meaningful legal...

Brock letter Our hearts break again and again as we read headlines in the news about the murders in our land. Wouldn’t it be wonderful if there were no murder. Ever. If everyone just determined within their own being to NOT murder. That would make our world a so much much better place. Can you conceptualize it? Of course we have laws against murder. But, they don’t really work. External laws never do. Internal laws operate from the inside out. While we are imagining, let us imagine a world without stealing. If everyone just determined to not...
While drones are coming of age in firefighting, they are also establishing a foothold in restoring fire-scorched forests. Firefighting drones grabbed the spotlight last April 15 as viewers around the world watched Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris go up in flames. It has stood for over 850 years, through wars, natural disasters, and everything in between including the fire. At first, it appeared the iconic building would be completely destroyed; however, French firefighters used thermal vision...
I’m still looking for an alternative for Donald Trump in 2020. I agree with almost everything negative that has been said of him. He is obnoxious, he makes unnecessary enemies, he is undiplomatic, he does not command loyalty, he generates hate, etc., etc., etc.… BUT, and it is a big but, many of his initiatives are spot on. We have allowed our friends to take advantage of us. China doesn’t play fair. Border security is both a matter of law and a matter of national interest. We must do what is best for America. We don’t need a new agenda;...
In Southern California during a traffic stop, the driver of the stopped car pulled out a rifle and started shooting. The policeman on the scene was killed, later two others were wounded. The shooter fired indiscriminately at other motorists. The car of a young mother with two kids was hit in the windshield, the bullet barely missing them. Another motorist safely guided them to hide behind the engine block of the car. The situation, as law enforcement converged on the scene, was described as a “long and horrific” gunfight. The shooter was kil...
It has become routine: President Donald Trump spends a golfing break at one of his properties. Tragically, horrific gun massacres also have become part of the routine, two of them just the other weekend, one of them clearly the consequence of a white supremacist who had gone over the edge, armed with the most lethal handheld weapons of mass destruction. By the time the president finally emerged after sending platitudinous tweets of support for El Paso, Texas, and Dayton, Ohio, he faced the assembled reporters to declare, "Hate has no place in...
At some point in the late 1960s, you could be forgiven for thinking that the FBI was in charge of the KKK. It conducted an operation that infiltrated, manipulated and ran the group into the ground. With violent white hate again on the rise, we should take some inspiration -- even if the methods can't be replicated -- from the FBI's past grappling with racist extremists. If there were any doubt that the country has a white nationalist problem, the shocking attack on an El Paso, Texas, Walmart should remove it. These self-radicalizing freaks, a...

Well done Like Susan Barbee wrote in a recent edition of The Gazette, my wife and I recently made cemetery visits, and like Ms. Barbee we were somewhat dismayed by what we saw. We visited the Colfax Cemetery and were surprised at the dried up grass (I did see the article that said the sprinkler system is being repaired). What was exposed was the green and blooming morning glory in the dry grass. Fortunately, there was none growing on my father’s grave. He would have been greatly offended. While the grass is dry, I hope the caretakers will a...
More battery operated cars and trucks are making their way on to streets and highways, so why not trains? That may not be too far off if BNSF tests are successful. BNSF and Wabtec (formerly GE Transportation) are developing a battery-electric high-horsepower road locomotive--the type that moves freight trains between Seattle and Chicago. Once all the equipment and support systems are in place, the plan is to run tests between Stockton and Barstow, Calif., (350 miles) beginning in late 2020....
I realize every writer with a second hand computer will sit down at their keyboard this week and write about the shootings in El Paso and Dayton. I hope you read them all. Some will be emphatic that the only way to stop the shootings is to eliminate all guns in America. The other extreme will be just as emphatic, “Arm everyone so the people can protect themselves.” Others will be somewhat less fanatical, but you will find a near vacuum in the middle. Both sides are ready to fight for what they believe is right for America, but few are wil...
Last week in a 24 hour period, 31 innocent people were shot and killed in two mass shootings. Nearly 40 additional people were injured. The massacres occurred in Dayton, Ohio, and El Paso, Texas. Sadly, the shootings were predictable, not as to time and place, but as an increasingly regular event in America. These two shootings followed the attack in Gilroy, California. Although the definition of a mass shooting differs, one count puts the number of mass shootings at 248 through July 31 of this year. Reportedly, 979 people were shot and 246...
House Speaker Nancy Pelosi is playing a sophisticated game. Since her Democrats took the House, she's the one who has steadfastly fought off a hasty plunge into the impeachment of President Donald Trump. In the process, she has appeared to resist the more volatile factions in her caucus, particularly the attention-grabbing newbies, along with impatient Democrats nationwide who have loudly demanded that she clear the way so they can drop the I-Bomb. She will not like this comparison, but Pelosi has been the tortoise racing with her rabbits, her...
There was a time when the left considered McCarthyism the worst of all political tactics. That was before it became useful to question Mitch McConnell's loyalty to his country. The Senate majority leader's offense is blocking Democratic-sponsored election security bills, which has occasioned the sort of charges that Democrats have spent the better half of the past 50 years ruling out of bounds. The Washington Post headlined a column, "Mitch McConnell is a Russian asset." It wasn't tongue-in-cheek. "Let's," urged Post columnist Dana Milbank,...
Life skills I learned in the 1950's might be well applied in present day. Recently while decorating at the Bethel Cemetery in Steptoe it brought back memories of my youth. My Mom was the caretaker when I was five. No Kindergarten then, so I would go each day to help her on the hill. We had hoses, sprinklers, a power reel mower and hand held clippers. Those were the tools we used, along with our desire for a job well done. Today the grounds are serviced with a riding lawnmower, in-ground sprinklers and weed eaters. I know times have changed,...
Sweden and Washington State are very similar. Both have strong “green” movements and are quickly moving to eliminate all carbon-emitting fuels from cars and power plants. The caution for Washington elected officials is not to jam through hastily mandated programs which have significant unintended consequences such as has happened recently in Sweden. Washington and Sweden are aggressively working to put more electric vehicles on the road. Transportation is Washington State’s largest source of gr...
When our legs began to complain about the climb into the overhead bunk of our camper, my wife and I bought a year-round cabin on the Pend Oreille River. It has become our get away when the normal pressures of life need release. One such day last March we decided to go to the cabin and take a day trip to the Kalispel Swan Festival. The newspaper told us the ice was still on the lake where the swans normally stop. We were a little bummed, but decided to come anyway. To our delight, the swans had decided to settle on the open water across from...
A privately funded report on the Snake River Dams has just been released. The report recommends that the dams be taken out and the river be restored to natural flow. The study is called the Snake River Dams: Economic Tradeoffs of Removal. It will be discussed at a press conference today in Seattle. The study reports on all aspects of the consequences of the loss of the dams, including transportation, irrigation, recreation, power generation and fish. Although the study discusses the negatives of breaching the four lower Snake River dams and poi...
What a sad debate between those who contend that Donald Trump fires off his increasingly hateful comments because he's cleverly trying to distract and those who insist it's because he simply has no impulse control. Is his racism uncontrolled or is it calculated, the worst form of demagoguery? In spite of his halfhearted claim -- "I don't have a racist bone in my body" -- he really makes no bones about the fact that he's an out-and-out bigot. And here's the scary part: It works. Look no further than his massive rallies, where thousands of his...
Beto O'Rourke, the losing Texas senator candidate who bootstrapped his way into becoming a losing presidential candidate, had a message for refugees who had come to America: Your new country is a hellhole. The former congressman told a roundtable of refugees and immigrants in Nashville, Tenn., "This country was founded on white supremacy. And every single institution and structure that we have in this country still reflects the legacy of slavery and segregation and Jim Crow and suppression." Just in case the newcomers were inclined to believe...
