  • Commissioners and lease signees

    Oct 24, 2024

Since when has the Golden Rule, “Do unto others as you would have them do unto you”, been completely eliminated from your mindset and replaced with the juvenile, “Me first”, objective? Great, you want to increase revenue into your personal and county financial standings, but at the cost of causing grief to innocent bystanders? These innocent bystanders understand the undue tax burden that these monstrosities will create in the future. These innocent bystanders are absolutely not jealous of your perceived “windfall.” Instead, they simply pity...

  • Regarding wind farms on Kamiak Butte

    Oct 24, 2024

Let’s tear up ground (irreversibly) to install inadequate energy generating wind mills (which are largely non-recyclable) in a gallant effort to save the environment. One of the first three definitions of the word ‘irony’ found in the dictionary: Incongruity between what might be expected and what actually occurs. And let’s not get into the cost for all of us going forward....forever. Colleen Swanson, Colfax...

  • Turbine lawyers

    Oct 24, 2024

I find it highly irresponsible that our Whitman County Commissioners have hired the very same group of lawyers that represent the wind turbine company to fight for the interests of the citizens of Whitman County. Remember, the Commissioners were elected to work for the citizens, not the other way around. Carolyn Imeson, Colfax...

  • Support for Sandberg

    Oct 24, 2024

I am writing to express my support for Roger Sandberg in his campaign for Superior Court Judge. Having closely observed his professional career, I believe he is the most qualified candidate for this position due to his breadth of experience and judicial temperament. Roger brings diverse legal experience, having served as a litigator and a judge for well over a decade. His practice in various areas of the law has prepared him to handle the complex issues that frequently arise in our courts. Equally important is Roger’s temperament on and off t...

  • Qualified candidate

    Oct 24, 2024

For the first time in over two decades voters in Whitman County are tasked with a very important decision: who will you elect as our next Whitman County Superior Court Judge? Roger Sandberg is the ONLY candidate with extensive knowledge and experience in ALL types of cases – family, civil, or criminal. Roger has served as Superior Court Commissioner, and Judge Pro Tem in Whitman County District Court. Unlike his opponent, he is the only candidate with jury trial experience, and the only candidate that has handled felony criminal cases. Roger h...

  • Vote Kohlmeier

    Whitman County Gazette|Oct 24, 2024

Remember that proposed bike trail between Colfax, Albion, and Pullman? It’s been talked about for a decade but it remains as nonexistent as it’s ever been. Rail traffic on the corridor stopped years ago and it hasn’t been used for anything productive since. Federal railbanking law not only allows but encourages the right-of-way to be converted into a public trail and bike path. The Chipman Trail has been railbanked in this manner. Here’s the kicker: we the people already own it but it languishes unused instead of benefiting the local economy...

  • Roger Sandberg for Judge

    Oct 17, 2024

This November I will be voting for Roger Sandberg for Whitman County Superior Court Judge. As a Deputy Prosecutor, I have had Roger Sandberg as an opponent for almost two decades. Though Mr. Sandberg and I are usually on opposing sides of a case, we joined with Judge Hart to form and work with the local Community Therapeutic Court. The Community Court identifies criminal defendants with mental health or substance use disorder issues who want to turn their lives around. There is no monetary reward in this for Mr. Sandberg, nor is it part of his...

  • Endorses Sandberg

    Whitman County Gazette|Oct 10, 2024

Eighteen years ago I was pleased to bring Roger Sandberg int our law firm. He has proven to be a very competent trial attorney, having success before juries in both civil and criminal matters. Roger and his wife, Heather, are raising three great kids. The reason all current and retired judges support Roger for Whitman County Superior Court Judge is two-fold. First, Roger has the patience, integrity and judicial demeanor that is essential. Second, his opponent’s legal experience is very limited, she has exclusively been a divorce lawyer. She h...

  • Letters to the Editor

    Oct 3, 2024

Your vote, your choice “You go after me, I’m coming after you.” (Donald Trump, August 5, 2023) Hey Donald, you talkin’ to me? Or are you threatening judges, witnesses, potential jurors, prosecutors, reporters? Political opponents, election workers, donors, folks with Harris yard signs, all of the above? All of us? People, are we going to have a democracy or a MOBocracy? When they tell you who they are, believe them. Your vote, your choice. Steve Swoope, Colfax Reader supports Brozik in judicial race How will you choose your Whitman County...

  • Wind Turbine Downwinders

    Whitman County Gazette|Sep 26, 2024

Fact: Wind Turbine blades wear out and are sometimes replaced. Fact: The fiber dust and particles are being deposited downwind from the turbines and it will never go away. In Texas many ranches now will not buy hay if it has been raised close to turbines. If that is the case in Texas what may be happening to our crops and soil when there are thousands of turbines up wind from us in Wash. and Ore. Could that answer be hidden from us? Rod Hubner, Garfield...

  • Superior Court Judge

    Whitman County Gazette|Sep 26, 2024

Dear editor, My name is Gene Siple. I am now retired but I served eight years as the Coordinator for Whitman County Legal Services, the county volunteer lawyer program that helped low-income people find legal assistance in civil cases. I am not an attorney myself, but I had the privilege of working with local attorneys who were willing to provide pro bono assistance to clients. I am grateful for the many hours that Jenna Brozik donated to the program. Civil legal cases, such as family law, are very complex and time consuming. Jenna always...

  • Letters to the editor

    The Gazette|Sep 19, 2024

Endorses Jenna Brozik for judge Jenna was my attorney for a very difficult child custody case following the death of my sister in 2018. I am forever grateful to Jenna for how hard she fought for my family and my niece. She did this because she cared and truly wanted the best outcome for my entire family. During the child custody trial, Jenna showed she was a force to be reckoned with. Jenna has the best qualities to be the next judge. She is ethical, honest, fair and very knowledgeable of the law. It seems like there is a system of favoritism...

  • Letter for Commissioners

    Whitman County Gazette|Aug 22, 2024

I am writing to our commissioners to respectfully plead to do SOMETHING to stop this travesty of ruining the beautiful, productive Palouse Country. Please remember that your were elected for the people of Whitman County, not the outside money grabbers that want to ruin our area with our tax dollars for their gain. They are lying in every way. Saying they support our communities, right, they are throwing around a few dollars to make it look like they care about our towns. These turbines are worthless eyesores & most certainly are not...

  • Legals vs Illegals

    Whitman County Gazette|Aug 15, 2024

This letter is in response to Nancy Street’s letter found in the August 1, 2024 edition of the Gazette. Growing up, and even now, I know of no illegal immigrant offspring. My grandpa came from Ireland to find work and we, his descendants, were fortunate enough to be born American. All I ever knew until politics got in the way a few years ago was immigrant because all those who came this way obeyed U.S. laws, studied and took the test, and became Americans. In your naming of several prominent Republicans their immigrant wives, the you ask, ...

  • Planned Parenthood

    Aug 15, 2024

Dear Editor, The Washington State Legislature and Governor Inslee have acted ignominiously and in opposition to biblical ethics. The Attorney General has threatened small hospital districts with legal peril. In response, the Whitman Hospital and Medical Clinics (WHMC) leadership has entered into an agreement with Planned Parenthood of Greater Washington and North Idaho to facilitate the destruction of human life, also known as pregnancy termination. WHMC executive staff has stated that WHMC will uphold the conscience clause included within the...

  • No, Thank You

    Whitman County Gazette|Aug 15, 2024

I am not sold on windfarms in the least. Quite the contrary. I remain unimpressed with benefits touted, and I’m not aware of a compelling need locally that would press for this level of infrastructure application. If people are honestly dedicated to a clean, renewable energy, then we’d be talking about nuclear power. Before I retired from work at the university in Pullman, each weekday morning, at a certain point on my trip, I’d find the butte filling my front windshield expanse, with the beautiful fields skirting her base. I had the same...

  • Opposed to turbines

    Whitman County Gazette|Aug 8, 2024

As farmers and residents in the Kamiak area, we oppose the proposed Harvest Hills wind project. We need to produce clean, reliable energy, but this project doesn’t justify the drawbacks. The viewshed would be changed forever. 45 turbines over 600 feet tall would be visible from all over the Palouse, including Kamiak. There is also the matter of substation and transmission infrastructure that hasn’t been addressed yet. The field impacts from the roads, turbines and infrastructure would impact those of us actively farming more than Vestas wil...

  • Harvest Hills Simulation

    Aug 8, 2024

Did you hear that Harvest Hills Wind Project was in town? At least they showed up to present something for the public. Just a few hiccups with it all: 1. 5 days notice given per the newspaper ads, very short notice for people who are busy 2. The meetings were during harvest time and no evening sessions for those folks who work a daytime job, no wonder there wasn’t a big turnout 3. They did commit to only 45 turbines being installed, not 70 as per their DOD application 4. The photos were for illustrative purposes only, with editorial license, on...

  • Public viewing

    Whitman County Gazette|Aug 8, 2024

Recently Harvest Hills Wind Project had a public viewing of their project around Kamiak Butte, I was surprised and shocked to see two of their photo simulations depicting wind turbines on our property and neighbor’s property next to Kamiak Butte. This seems like a sloppy disregard for the property owners and citizens of Whitman County. If they can’t get their “approximate simulations” correct, what else is goofed up? Are they not showing turbines where they know they have leases already? Are the turbines in the photos at the actual height...

  • Immigrants Enrich Our Country

    Nancy Street|Aug 1, 2024

Okay, readers, hands up if you or your ancestors are/were immigrants to the United States, legal or illegal. All hands up? Even Native Americans came across the Bering Straits or by land. They have the best claim to land, however, since they arrived long before Europeans, Africans and Asians. Then, explain the Mass Deportation signs on display at the Republican National Convention and the anti-immigrant tone to the speeches; and why Republicans just scuttled the bipartisan immigration bill. Should legal and illegal immigrants be deported? If...

  • Project 2025

    Jul 25, 2024

“Project 2025? Nothing to see here. Agenda 47 is the go-to,” the Republicans tell us. Well, I went there and surprise, it’s not so much a policy document as a series of Trump videos. But the policy content matches up pretty well. Despite claiming he knew nothing about Project 2025 (not true, there are videos), that’s the one we should be looking at and here’s why. It’s a very well developed blueprint for HOW to accomplish the worst goals that were not accomplished in Trump’s first term, partly because the administration got off to a disorgan...

  • Roger Sandberg Endorsement

    Jul 25, 2024

In selecting a Whitman County Superior Court Judge in the upcoming election, the community will shape Whitman County’s judicial system for years to come. Having litigated cases in the area for nearly 28 years, I join most of the local legal community and elected officials in endorsing Roger Sandberg for Whitman County Superior Court Judge. Roger Sandberg has the work ethic, legal ability, and temperament to allow him to be an outstanding judge. Given Roger’s qualifications, it is no coincidence that he is endorsed by a vast majority of the loc...

  • Vote Sandberg

    Jul 18, 2024

Roger Sandberg is on the ballot this year for Whitman County Superior Court Judge. I urge your readers to join in voting for Sandberg for Judge. As the County’s prosecuting attorney I have worked with many judges, here and in other parts of the State; and I am convinced beyond any reasonable doubt that Mr. Sandberg deserves your vote. Roger Sandberg has the knowledge, the broad experience, the common sense, and the plain good judgment that our next judge needs to have. Please vote Sandberg for judge. Denis Tracy. Colfax...

  • Love thy neighbors

    Whitman County Gazette|Jul 18, 2024

I think it’s a safe estimate to say that more than 90% of this community is against having windmills on our picturesque Palouse hills. One landowner who signed a windmill contract agreed with me on that estimate. Simply put, the Palouse is beautiful, and windmills are ugly. No one I’ve talked to has “gotten used to” the windmills in the Oakesdale area. They are just as unsightly today as they were on day one. “But what about private property rights,” is the response I got from another. I don’t want to tell anyone what to do with their propert...

  • Endorsing Sandberg

    Jul 11, 2024

I have publicly endorsed Roger Sandberg as the next Whitman County Superior Court Judge. People have asked me why I endorse him. The answer is very obvious, it is because Roger is the most qualified candidate for this very important judicial position. I know from being the Whitman County Superior Judge for the last 8 years that Roger has common sense, experience and temperament to be an excellent Judge. The Superior Court Judge hears mostly serious [felony] and family law cases, but also decides significant cases such as the recent Pac-12 case....
