  • Best choice

    Jul 26, 2018

Rob Rembert is the best choice for Whitman County District Judge. Here is why: 1. Rob Rembert has served as both Whitman County District Court judge pro tem and Whitman County Superior Court commissioner pro tem. Rob's experience in both civil and criminal law includes disputes of business, landlord-tenant relations, breach of contracts, collections and domestic challenges. His opponents have little or no civil experience. As municipal court judges, their jurisdiction is limited to misdemeanor cases, traffic violations, city ordinance violation...

  • For Rembert

    Jul 26, 2018

With three candidates being considered in the Primary, I encourage voters to elect Rob Rembert. As an attorney, Rob has more than 21 years of law practice in Whitman County. Rob’s judicial service includes Whitman County Court judge pro tem and Whitman County Superior Court commissioner pro tem. Rob has significant experience in civil and criminal cases. Beyond the courtroom and the law practice, Rob has devoted countless hours serving our county and Pullman through organizations that include the Whitman County Civil Service Commission, P...

  • Most qualified

    Jul 26, 2018

Ballots are in the hands of Whitman County voters, and there is a very important primary race to be decided. I am voting for John Hart for Whitman County District Court judge, and I strongly encourage others to do so as well. I believe John Hart is, by far, the most qualified candidate. John Hart is currently the Colfax Municipal Court judge and the only candidate with significant judicial experience. He is endorsed by Judge Douglas Robinson, the man who has held the district court judge position for 18 years, and someone whom I have a great...

  • Long hours

    Jul 26, 2018

I choose Rob Rembert as the next Whitman County District Court judge. This choice is based upon my first-hand knowledge of his nearly 22 years of practice as a civil litigation and criminal attorney with Irwin, Myklebust, Savage & Brown. In addition to earning my respect, Rob is held in high regard by his clients and peers, as well as judges and community leaders. Did you know that approximately 37 percent of the cases heard in district court are civil? Rob’ extensive civil experience includes business disputes, landlord-tenant, breach of c...

  • Rule of law

    Jul 26, 2018

The framers of our Constitution weren't just a bunch of fellows plotting ways to get rid of annoying British overlords. They were educated, and beyond that, very smart. They knew that if they didn't put down some strict basic guidelines for this nation in its infancy; they would end up with something not unlike what they were fighting against. What then would be the point? What they came up with was genius - so basic and so effective, that nearly two-and-a-half centuries later it is still functionally the foundational law of the land. American...

  • Requires listening

    Jul 26, 2018

Rep. Joe Schmick is one of the most gracious men I have known in both my professional career and personal life. He’s thoughtful and direct and tells you how things are. While he is soft-spoken, he doesn’t sugar coat things and he carefully considers your input, even when he doesn’t necessarily agree. I’ve found him to be very open and a wealth of knowledge about the issues facing our state government. It was surprising to me, then, to see how rudely Rep. Schmick was treated by his opponent at the recent voter’s forum in Pullman last week. His...

  • Public servant

    Jul 26, 2018

It is rare that we can select someone who is truly a public servant when we are casting our vote. We have this opportunity in the race for Whitman County District Court judge. One candidate has served extensively in our community, often in a leadership capacity. Attorney Rob Rembert has served on the library board (11 years,) education foundation (8 years,) chamber of commerce (6 years,) county salary commission (5 years) and others. This volunteer service has been given at the same time that he has been in local private law practice over the...

  • Continue the legacy

    Jul 26, 2018

Whitman County District Court has been fortunate to have two outstanding judges for the past 35 years, Judge Douglas Robinson and Judge David Frazier. As the District Court administrator, I worked alongside both of these remarkable judges. John Hart would continue this legacy as the Whitman County District Court judge. As Whitman County District Court administrator for the past 34 years, I am very familiar with all of the candidates running for Whitman County District Court judge. Personally, I like each of them, but John Hart is by far the...

  • Hymn sing

    Jul 26, 2018

For anyone that wasn’t there, you missed a wonderful hour of singing and listening to the ladies trio, men’s quartet and The Harvester, with wonderful piano and organ accompaniment. After a shy start to requesting hymns, it almost became a frenzy of requests, the crowd probably would have stayed and sang another hour. Although it was a big crowd, it wasn’t packed, so next time don’t miss out. Onecho finished the night with homemade pie à la mode for all. It was a lovely summer evening. --Doreen Riedner, Colfax...

  • Can't lose

    Jul 26, 2018

The race for District Court judge is one the residents of Whitman County can’t lose. While any of the three candidates would serve the county well, my choice is Rob Rembert. I’ve worked with, or against all three candidates. Not only have I worked in the trenches with them, I’ve had the pleasure of observing each of them. As a lawyer, Rob has successfully represented both those who have been injured and those accused of crimes. He has done so for more than 20 years. This familiarity with both victims and defendants is a strength the other...

  • America first

    Jul 26, 2018

Trump will destroy the rest of the world later, after he… a) Guts enforcement of the clean air and water acts b) Deregulates big banks and eviscerates consumer protection laws and agencies c) Cuts taxes for the superrich while running up huge deficits and ballooning the national debt d) Pardons Sheriff Joe Arapaio and the Hammonds gang of the Malheur standoff (among others) to show that the law doesn’t matter if you’re a Trumper e) Puts people in charge of agencies whose avowed purpose is to put them out of business. (e.g. climate change denie...

  • A fair shake

    Jul 26, 2018

I urge you to vote for Dan LeBeau for district court judge and here’s why. LeBeau is the chief deputy prosecutor for the county and has been working for all of us for the last 13 years. During those 13 years, Dan has worked his way up through our courts - prosecuting all kinds of cases - from misdemeanors to rape and murder, as well as handling contract disputes and land-use issues. Through all this, LeBeau has fought for justice - justice for victims and justice for the community, while also upholding his prosecutor’s oath to protect the rig...

  • Making the blue line bolder

    Jana Mathia, Gazette Staff|Jul 19, 2018

A current trend sweeping social media is the police lip sync challenge. Law offices across the country are posting videos of anywhere from one person to the entire department―staff and support personnel included―mouthing along to songs from current hits to ones debuted on LP tracks. Different departments have different takes on the videos. For some it is a way to highlight their officers, resources, staff and toys. For others it is just pure fun. A few use it as a way to commemorate fallen com...

  • Don't Cry for Angela Merkel

    Rich Lowry, Syndicated Columnist|Jul 19, 2018

Angela Merkel is, her supporters like to gloat, the leader of the free world. Just don't ask her to spend as if she is. Donald Trump has made the German chancellor one of his favorite rhetorical targets, especially over Germany's anemic defense expenditures. This has led to worries about the future of the trans-Atlantic alliance, and reflexive support for Merkel among the American political elite. Trump shouldn't openly mock Merkel, or suggest that there have been annual dues to NATO that Germany has failed to pay. Trump tends to view foreign c...

  • Acronym Creation Tactics

    Bob Franken, Syndicated Columnist|Jul 19, 2018

For those who thought "acronym" was a city in Ohio, it is not. According to my handy dandy online dictionary, an acronym is "a word formed from the initial letters or groups of letters of words in a set phrase or series of words and pronounced as a separate word," as in WAC from Women's Army Corps or OPEC from Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries. Or MAGA, as in Make America Great Again, the Donald Trump campaign slogan splattered across red baseball hats worn by millions of Americans, mostly white, mostly intolerant, who have...

  • Backs Rembert

    Jul 19, 2018

We are fortunate to have three enthusiastic candidates for District Court Judge. The successful candidate will assume the position now held by Doug Robinson, who will be retiring at the end of his current term. During his years as District Court Judge, Doug has very ably served us. The three candidates now vying for the position all appear to be qualified to handle the job. Of the three, the candidate with whom I am most familiar is Rob Rembert. Rob's roots run deep in Whitman County. He is descended from some of the County's earliest...

  • Remembers Rembert

    Jul 19, 2018

Remember Rembert! I’ve been repeating this almost daily since learning of Rob Rembert’s decision to run for Whitman County district court judge. I believe Rob is the best candidate for the position, and the reasons are numerous. Many of us know that he’s been practicing law in Whitman County for almost 22 years and that he has extensive experience in both criminal and civil law. Did you know that almost 40 percent of the cases filed in Whitman County District Court are civil cases and neither of Rob’s opponents have much experience with ci...

  • Support Rembert

    Jul 19, 2018

Judging by all the political signs around Whitman County, one of the most contested races seems to be the race for District Court Judge. There are three qualified candidates running for the position and they’re all keeping the sign industry in business. I’m supporting attorney Rob Rembert for the position, having served with him on a number of committees, including the board of the Pullman Chamber. He’s been an outstanding contributor. He has been an attorney for 22 years, served as a temporary District Court judge and a Superior Court Commi...

  • Backs LeBeau

    Jul 19, 2018

I support Dan LeBeau for Whitman County District Court judge. Dan has all of the qualities to be an excellent, independent and fair judge. Dan is truly committed to Whitman County to do a great job. Believe me, I know what it takes to be a good judge --Trudy G. Libey, Colfax...

  • Rembert supporters

    Jul 19, 2018

We have known Robert Rembert for more than 22 years, which encompassed his time as an attorney with the Pullman firm of Irwin, Myklebust, Savage & Brown. As an accounting firm sharing space with the law firm, we had an opportunity to watch his development as an attorney in Whitman County and as a community leader in both Pullman and in the surrounding area. Rob’s involvement during those years was impressive. As a partner in the law firm, he handled both civil and criminal litigation. He is well-versed in the areas of landlord-tenant, c...

  • Qualifications

    Jul 19, 2018

I supported Dave Frazier for district court judge in 1981, and again for superior court judge in 1999, and I also supported Gary Libey for superior court judge in 2016. I know what it takes to be a great judge - hardworking, experienced and fair. I support Dan LeBeau for Whitman County district court judge this year as I believe he has all of those qualifications. --Milt Nelson, Thornton...

  • Backs Rembert

    Jul 19, 2018

Robert Rembert would be a fine District Judge. I urge the voters of Whitman County to vote for him on August 7, 2018. District Court is where most people have their first contact with the judicial system. Robert brings a fine legal mind to the job, but will also be courteous for all those who might come before him. --David R. Risley, Clarkston...

  • Backs Sutherland

    Jul 19, 2018

I am a 70-year old retired woman. After earning a BSc. in Biochemistry from Washington State University in 1970, I spent 45 years as a research technician/lab manager at universities around the country, including WSU and the University of Idaho. I was politically active during my time as a student at WSU (think Vietnam, Nixon and Cambodia), but then, as they say, “Life happened.” The country was basically running along OK, so my activism scaled back to regularly voting. But now, I again feel that my country is going badly astray and we nee...

  • The Lazy Days of Summer

    Frank Watson, Gazette Columnist|Jul 19, 2018

We had a cold, wet spring. I don’t know whether to blame global warming or Donald Trump, but it sure was hard on my garden. I didn’t think my corn was ever going to come up. I am glad warm weather has finally arrived. I became aware of the arrival of summer this week as I was sitting at an outside table in a small strip mall slurping a huckleberry milkshake and watching the traffic go by. It seemed almost every vehicle was either pulling a boat or an RV; some were pulling both. I was raised on a farm, so I was introduced to backing up a tra...

  • A question of the mainstream

    Garth Meyer, Gazette Reporter|Jul 12, 2018

The nomination of Brett Kavanaugh to the Supreme Court Monday night should mark a reckoning for the Democratic Party. With now three consecutive respected choices in the most major of personnel decisions, President Trump has solidified a claim to the mainstream voter, in a time which the Democrats are defined by niche issues. Trump’s picks of Mike Pence, Neil Gorsuch and now Kavanaugh, for millions of people, backs the reason they voted for him. For millions of others, it makes it that much h...
