LACROSSE — The 107th annual Farmers’ Festival is set for Friday through Sunday, June 24-26. First held in June of 1915 under the name “Chautauqua”, the theme this year is “Back to our Roots,” which honors the celebration’s old-fashioned origins. COLFAX — A Potlatch, Idaho, man has joined the Whitman County Gazette as a summer reporter intern. Reid Thompson, 20, began his internship Monday, June 13. He is a junior studying journalism and international relations at Syracuse University in New York. 8 Years ago, Friday, June 11, 1897 Fishing for Squirrels E.R. Barrell, a hardware merchant of Colfax was in Spokane on business Tuesday. Among other things he purchased while there was a quantity of large fish hooks. When asked if fishing had become suddenly good in the Palouse country he informed a Chronicle reporter that it had not, but that the farmers were using the hooks to catch squirrels with. MALDEN - John Wayne Pioneer Wagons and Riders raised nearly $5,000 for local use during their 17-day cross-state trip that concluded Sunday, June 5. LACROSSE – A LaCrosse student has been awarded the Clark Dorothy King Endowed Scholarship. Gunnar Aune was honored by Oklahoma State University’s Ferguson College of Agriculture with academic scholarships for the 2022-2023 academic year.
