Inland Empire Theatre cast its fourth annual production, Shrek Jr., to be performed June 19-21 at the historic Tekoa Empire Theatre. The production features a cast of 53 youth from communities around the Palouse. Daphne Jacobs (Rosalia) and Levi Fletcher (Tekoa) will star in the production as Princess Fiona and Shrek the ogre. About 108 residents donated more than $700 in non-perishable food and toiletry items for the 20th annual Food for Fines drive. Donations came in throughout Whitman County with little over half of those not attached to the waiving of library fines. Food for Fines is held each February when area pantries report more people struggling with high heat bills and difficulty feeding their hungry families. Trinity Lutheran Church’s Elizabeth Circle met at the church on March 2 to assemble 42 bundles of children’s items to be sent to World Relief. The bundles were wrapped with child-sized quilts the group has been making for the last five months. Included in the bundles were: a quilt, receiving blanket, towel, diapers, shirts, pajamas, coats with hood or hat, socks, bars of soap and safety pins. Weight restrictions have been lifted on all country roads as the ground has dried and thawed. Post limits were removed on the last batch of roads Feb. 26, east of Highway 195, which was a week longer than west of Highway 195. Dirt roads in the county are still closed to all traffic. Power outages this weekend were the result of high winds around noon on Sunday, leaving many homes without electricity until about 6 a.m. Monday. A large uprooted tree fell on the roof at Dale and Vicki Broeckel’s home causing extensive damage. The home at the Alkali Flat Arena sustained roof damage with loss of shingles. The wind shear, which lasted less than five minutes, also overturned harrow bed machinery parked in the lot. No other major damage was reported other than downed tree limbs.
