It appears the Tekoa sewer line replacement project has begun to reap its intended benefits. The town is now seeing lower electricity costs at the sewage treatment plant along with lower chemical costs. Both results are attributed to new pipes cutting infiltration of ground water in the system. That cuts down the volume load on the treatment plant. City Clerk Kynda Browning reported that in 2013 Tekoa paid $10,164 less than budgeted for utility costs and $4,810 less for treatment chemicals. The...

Paul begins his first letter to the Corinthian church in this way: “I give thanks to my God always for you because of the grace of God that has been given you in Christ Jesus, for in every way you have been enriched in him, in speech and knowledge of every kind—just as the testimony of Christ has been strengthened among you—so that you are not lacking in any spiritual gift as you wait for the revealing of our Lord Jesus Christ” (1 Cor 1:4-7). Bobbi Mackleit would have known more about Colfax had she gone to Lakeside High School at Nine Mile Falls when teams from the schools were 1-A rivals. However, there was no high school there yet, so she and her brother went to Gonzaga Preparatory School in Spokane. Bobbi graduated in 1989 and was the first in her family to attend college. She always knew that she wanted to teach. When looking at college costs now for their family, she is amazed at how much less expensive college was then. At...

Did you know that the number one killer for women is not breast cancer – it is heart disease? It is more deadly for women than all forms of cancer combined. Since 1984, more women than men have died each year from heart disease. Many women are either unaware of the symptoms to pay attention to or may attribute their symptoms to other causes. They are sweating, pressure, nausea and jaw pain. They are also symptoms that women often brush off as the flu, stress or simply feeling under the weather. Whether it’s disbelief, lack of awareness or mis...

Rich Lowry’s editorial printed in National Review and reprinted in the Whitman Gazette (Thursday, January 9, 2014) was a fair exercise in sarcasm. His point is well made. The stars of music, sports, movies, television, medicine, business, politics, military, IRS, FBI, NSA, NRA, BSA, WOW, and a host of others, keep letting us down. They appear to be racing one another in a seemingly endless death spiral into absurdity, recklessness, selfishness, and immorality. This is new? Not for those who are informed by the one source that has been tried, t...
