St. John With just three weeks until St. John gets invaded with thousands of fans for the start of boat races, Amanda Webb says the crew is working hard to get lawns mowed and the slough filled. The first race will be June 15, and she promises it’s going to be bigger and better this year. The Whitman Ladies of the Nile lunch and style show had more than 100 attending from as far away as Spokane. Door prizes were a big hit with many getting great gifts. In the 1870’s and 1880’s, German immigrants streamed into Whitman County from two areas. A large number came from Germany, often Bavaria in southern Germany, and settled in Colfax, Colton and Uniontown. An easy gauge as to where they lived in Germany, those from northern Germany were often Lutheran, and those from southern Germany were often Roman Catholic. Central Germany was more mixed. Dessert auction to fund Gulch Tekoa’s annual Slippery Gulch fireworks dessert auction will be Friday, May 17, at 6 p.m. in the Tekoa Community Center. In a new addition this year, it will be followed by a dance. The evening begins at 6 p.m. with a taco dinner (donations accepted) followed by the auction of dessert items. Nancy L. Francis, Rosalia, complained of neck and back pain after the 2009 Subaru Legacy she was driving Monday struck a cow on Highway 195 2.1 miles south of Colfax. Members of Tekoa and Oakesdale’s float committee have been named for the women of the year honor by the Preceptor Gamma Lambda chapter of Beta Sigma Phi of Tekoa and Oakesdale. They are Karen Blomgren, Robin Harp, Linda Zehm, Marianne Gordon, Melinda Gordon and (not pictured) Hillary Lawson. St. John Harry and Erma Davis this year marked their 65th wedding anniversary. They were married May 8, 1948. Harry said they grew up together in the small town of Lamont. They were the first couple to get married in the Community Church in Sprague. The first had burned down and was being rebuilt at the time. They made their home at the Lamont farm where they had three children. They moved to Sunset for about 10 years and then built a home in St. John where they still live. 8 years ago May 18, 1888 One of the timbers in the bridge crossing the Palouse at the foot of Main Street gave away on Tuesday while a loaded truck was passing over. The bridge settled about a foot at the point where the break occurred. The bridge is closed up and teams to and from the depot are compelled to ford the river, which is low, until the break is repaired. Capt. J.A. Endicott Endicott is gearing up this week for the town-wide garage sale, which will be on Saturday, May 18, from 8 a.m. until noon. Maps of garage sale places will be available at the Endicott Food Center for people to pick up. To keep buyers going during the sale, the Community Club will have a bake sale at Endicott Food Center with all proceeds going to Relay For Life. Lamont With the nearest tennis courts being 30 miles away, it is hard to believe that tennis is thriving in the little town of Lamont, but it is. The McGregor Company’s Standing Tall for American Agriculture scholarship program focuses support of agriculture at a most important level - students. Four local high school seniors each received a $1,000 Standing Tall for American Agriculture Scholarship to go toward their college tuition.
