  • Author’s book goes Hollywood: Palouse library hosts author of debut novel

    The Palouse Library hosted author Julie Kibler on Friday afternoon. Kibler is the sister of Palouse resident and preschool teacher, Brittany Sawyer, and had her debut novel published, “Calling Me Home.” Palouse Library branch Manager Bev Pearce said about 25 people came to Kibler’s reading and book signing. “It went really well,” she said. Kibler introduced two of the main characters in the book to her Palouse Library audience and then described the publication process.     Thank you to Whitman Hospital’s Foundation!! Whitman Hospital’s Foundation raised over $15,000 at their recent dinner and auction with an estimated 75 people in attendance. The foundation’s mission is to ensure the financial future for our hospital. It raises and invests money so the hospital can survive through any tough economic times that may come along.   • ‘Food for Fines’ nets 138 donations

Whitman County Library’s 13th annual “Food for Fines” brought in donations from 138 residents who donated $900 in non-perishable food. Donations came in throughout Whitman County. Format of the drive allows library patrons to donate food in lieu of paying overdue fines. Almost one third of the donations were not attached to the waiving of library fines. Food for Fines is conducted each February when area pantries report more people are struggling with high heat bills... Full story

    Jane Aune of Colfax will offer beginning bridge classes each Tuesday and Thursday in April from 6:30-8 p.m. at the Colfax High School. The free classes are open to anyone interested in learning the basic skills and etiquette of the game. A retired school teacher, Aune loves to play bridge and has taught many people to play the game.     Lacrosse LaCrosse Community Outreach was unable to purchase the Thrift Shop building that was auctioned Feb. 15. At a recent meeting the group decided to not take any action until notified to vacate the premises. For now they are open for business and are still receiving goods from the community. Great dishes and lots of Easter decorations are in stock along with large selections of teens and women’s clothing.     Endicott Endicott/St. John Middle school students in olympia Sue Lynch, a middle school teacher from Endicott Middle School, and eight chaperones took 32 Endicott/St. John Middle School students on a field trip to Olympia, Seattle and Tacoma Feb. 18-20.     Whitman County Library welcomes donations of lightly used DVDs, newer books in good condition or historic books. Donated items benefit the library system in a number of ways. Last year, the library was able to expand the cataloged materials collection with 661 donated items that had an estimated value of more than $8,000. According to Library Director Kristie Kirkpatrick, the materials budget for the library was extended by 16 percent with the donations.
