The secondary school jazz band, a group of 35 musicians from Revelstroke, B.C., is staying in Colfax while they attend and perform in the Lionel Hampton Jazz Festival at the University of Idaho this week. The group also includes leaders and parents. Wednesday, a bus was parked across the street from the Top Notch Cafe as they enjoyed their first breakfast in Colfax. Tekoa High School senior Alex Overton received $5,000 last week in “Impact Funds” from Wilbur-Ellis branch manager Bob Gardner. The funds will help Overton to complete Nighthawk Court, an outdoor basketball court which is her senior project. Impact funds are awarded by Wilbur-Ellis quarterly to community projects nationwide. Construction of the court is planned for June, to be ready to play by Slippery Gulch Days. Ramona Pfaff, Colfax, was the winner of the 2013 Colfax & Community Fund Valentine’s Basket. The basket raffle marks the half-way point in the C&CF drive. For 65 years, hundreds of people have not only enjoyed shooting, rolling dice and playing cards at the Dusty Gun Club, they come for the real prize. Vlieger returns to base Army Staff Sgt. John E. Vlieger has returned to the U.S. after being deployed overseas at a forward operating base to serve in support of Operation Enduring Freedom. Endicott Tom Byers and Don Lust were best neighbors and friends for a lot of years. Tom spotted a broken bench by the grocery store and decided to restore it for use. So, he took it home, welded, painted and replaced the wood in memory of Don Lust. It even took on Cougar colors, since both men are Cougar fans. Meet Teri Calhoun, Colfax Post Office The new Colfax postmaster arrived in August and was officially named to her position on Dec. 15, 2012. Teri Calhoun moved to the Colfax Post Office from Lewiston, where she served in a supervisory position. Prior to that, she was a supervisor in Moscow for 16 years. MacKenzie Marker, Colfax, is the All Around Cowgirl for the Eastern Washington Junior Rodeo Association.
