Susan Harbour, a member of the 1981 class at Pullman High School, received the top academic award during commencement ceremonies for the 99th Washington State Patrol basic training class. Trooper Harbour attained a 95 percent grade average compared to a class average of 89 percent. She is also a 1986 summa cum laude graduate of the University of Oregon where she was named a first-team All American in 1985. She was inducted into UO hall of fame in 1995. Jess Ford of Pullman plans to host a fund raising event for Pullman High Booster Club Saturday at the Zeppoz parking lot on Bishop Blvd. from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. The agency will donate $20 to the club for every test drive taken during the day. They plan to have a Ford Explorer, Focus, Mustang, F-150, F 350, Fusion, Taurus and Escape at the lot. Rosalia Julie Pittmann was selected as the second vice regent of the state of Washington Daughters of the American Revolution at the 111th state conference last week in Pasco. The 2,200 members of the state hold annual conferences to congratulate the past year’s scholarship winners and state wide patriotic accomplishments. Juni Fisher, 2011 Western Music Association Entertainer of the Year, will return to the Empire Theatre Friday, May 18, at 7 p.m. She is also the WMA’s 2011 Female Performer of the Year, and her song, “Yakima,” which is about Yakima Canutt, was designated 2011 Song of the Year. Thrivent Financial for Lutherans and Second Harvest will distribute food to those in need next Tuesday, May 22, from 10 a.m. to noon at Peace Lutheran Church in Colfax. Vegetables, fruit and bread will be distributed to anyone in need of food assistance. No appointment or documentation are necessary to receive food. Thornton Cemetery Preservation Association has received $750 from the Northwest Farm Credit Services Rural Grant program. The grant will be used toward improving facilities at Thornton Cemetery, including a new water pump, storage tank and repairs to a tool shed. The application was submitted in March 2012. Madison C. Heersink, 20, suspect in a Pullman assault case last December, was sentenced to 30 days in jail Friday after pleading guilty to an amended charge of attempted second degree assault.
