Meet Dana Carroll, Colfax Dana and Bill Carroll came to Colfax about 30 years ago to start The Growers’ Guide. It wasn’t quite a straight path from Montana to Colfax. Dana and Bill first met when he was five and she was two and a half years old. They knew each other for years, and his sister was Dana’s close friend. They saw each other at county fairs and other places. Their first date was her junior prom. Dusty Steve and Becky Camp attended the Harvesting Clean Energy Conference for the western states this month. Their organization, C Farms Energy, received an award as the Innovator of the Year for the state of Washington for their biodiesel project. They also both picked up the flu while they were in Oregon. News has been received of the death last week of Tony Balsa of San Jose, Calif. He was the husband of Dusty native Helen Scheideman Balsa. They had four children, one of whom preceded him in death. Lindsay Webber and Erica Eng sang in the Washington Music Educators Association (WMEA) All-State Symphonic Choir during the All-Northwest Conference which was held at the Oregon Convention Center in Portland, Ore., Feb. 14-17. Tekoa eighth grader Tatiana Mendoza will compete at the Elks Regional Hoop Shoot March 2-3 in Vancouver. Mendoza won the age 12-13 championship for the state of Idaho. Tekoa is included in Idaho for the purpose of the Elks’ competition. Tatiana Mendoza and father Ignacio with a trophy and certificate she received for winning the Idaho portion of the Elks Hoop Shoot. The secondary school jazz band, a group of 35 musicians from Revelstroke, B.C., is staying in Colfax while they attend and perform in the Lionel Hampton Jazz Festival at the University of Idaho this week. The group also includes leaders and parents. Wednesday, a bus was parked across the street from the Top Notch Cafe as they enjoyed their first breakfast in Colfax. Tekoa High School senior Alex Overton received $5,000 last week in “Impact Funds” from Wilbur-Ellis branch manager Bob Gardner. The funds will help Overton to complete Nighthawk Court, an outdoor basketball court which is her senior project. Impact funds are awarded by Wilbur-Ellis quarterly to community projects nationwide. Construction of the court is planned for June, to be ready to play by Slippery Gulch Days. Ramona Pfaff, Colfax, was the winner of the 2013 Colfax & Community Fund Valentine’s Basket. The basket raffle marks the half-way point in the C&CF drive. For 65 years, hundreds of people have not only enjoyed shooting, rolling dice and playing cards at the Dusty Gun Club, they come for the real prize. Vlieger returns to base Army Staff Sgt. John E. Vlieger has returned to the U.S. after being deployed overseas at a forward operating base to serve in support of Operation Enduring Freedom. Vlieger is a fire control sergeant assigned to the 4th Airborne Brigade Combat Team, 25th Infantry Division at Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson, Alaska. Endicott Tom Byers and Don Lust were best neighbors and friends for a lot of years. Tom spotted a broken bench by the grocery store and decided to restore it for use. So, he took it home, welded, painted and replaced the wood in memory of Don Lust. It even took on Cougar colors, since both men are Cougar fans. This is the result: a Cougar colored bench with a memorial placque that reads “In Memory of Don Lust.” People using that bench can remember Tom and Don working around town on a multitude of projects for the community. Meet Teri Calhoun, Colfax Post Office The new Colfax postmaster arrived in August and was officially named to her position on Dec. 15, 2012. Teri Calhoun moved to the Colfax Post Office from Lewiston, where she served in a supervisory position. Prior to that, she was a supervisor in Moscow for 16 years. Mark and Teri Cahloun Teri was born in Spokane and since her father was a school principal and then a superintendent, the family moved several times. She graduated from Wapato High School.
