    Lacrosse Students in grades kindergarten through sixth, the junior high choir, and high school guitar/music class attended “The Sound of Music” at the Colfax High auditorium last Tuesday morning, Nov. 20. Preschool through second grade students enjoyed their annual Thanksgiving feast in a classroom together Wednesday morning. Fifth graders made pumpkin pie in a bag to enjoy while they wrapped up their Social Studies unit about the Pilgrims.     In Whitman County, 7,976 residents are food insecure. This means one in five people in the county is unsure of where the next meal will come from. In Whitman County it is estimated that more than 29 percent of people are living in poverty. The poverty level for a family of two is less than $14,580 a year and $22,056 for a family of 4. Whitman County food banks receive funds from the WSDA Food Assistance Program and served 4,681 people in need of food last year.     The students in grades K-6 were treated to a pizza party Friday because all of them had received student of character for two straight months, a record. Student led conferences were last Wednesday for grades K-12. The book fair ran in conjunction with the conferences.     Mike Stine and Norma Gibson competed in the Special Olympic bowling tournament in Spokane Sunday, Nov. 11, at Lilac Lanes. They are members of the Whitman County Cougars team, based in Pullman. Mike and Norma both earned gold medals in the tournament. Mike bowled a 113 for both of his games. Norma bowled a 112 and an 82.     Barn calendar 2013 on stands The new 2013 edition of Barns of Whitman County calendars are now on sale with all proceeds benefiting Friends of Whitman County Library. Photographs by Steve Van Vleet depict 11 of the barns.
