Whitman County Library welcomes donations of lightly used DVDs, newer books in good condition or historic books. Donated items benefit the library system in a number of ways. Last year, the library was able to expand the cataloged materials collection with 661 donated items that had an estimated value of more than $8,000. According to Library Director Kristie Kirkpatrick, the materials budget for the library was extended by 16 percent with the donations. Meet Bonnie Smith, Colfax Born and raised in North Dakota, Bonnie Smith attended Minot State Teachers’ College, now Minot State University, and taught for seven years before Warren Smith came and carried her off to Washington. She taught primarily in upper grades there. Warren and Bonnie lived in Wenatchee first and then at Wawawai where they managed a mobile home park. Wired or Wireless was recently honored during a reception at the Malden Library to celebrate the conclusion of their two-year grant that provided 60 hours per week access to Malden’s library and computer center. Malden librarian Shannon Roe presented Wired or Wireless owner Bill Giebel and business manager Mike Puryear with Library Supporter of the Month honors. Dusty A week ago Tuesday, David and Phyllis Stueckle were in Kennewick to visit an old Navy buddy of David’s. It has been 60 years since the men last saw each other. The Stueckles also attended some of the state basketball tournament games in Spokane. Harmon and Jan Smith met Gina and Jason Morgan and Micah in Spokane and spent Thursday through Sunday enjoying the State B Tournament. Cooks were busy in the kitchen preparing sausage meals for the hundreds of hungry folks on Sunday at the 60th annual Uniontown Sausage Feed. Tables in the basement of the community center were packed as sausage lovers enjoyed their meals. Ken Oenning, “head of the whole she-bang,” said they made 1,750 pounds of sausage and fed between 1,300 and 1,400 people. The feed has been known to serve as many as 1,700 people. Auf Gehts to play at Dahmen The Auf Gehts German band will give a free concert at Dahmen Barn from 1 to 3 p.m. March 3, the same day as the Uniontown Sausage feed. The band was started in 1965 when Paul Wadleigh organized a small band to play before performances of the Pullman Summer Palace in the WSU Livestock Pavilion. Colfax school board member and St. Baldrick’s Foundation head-shaving event treasurer Brian Becker noted Monday night that the Feb. 13 fundraiser’s proceeds will clear $13,000. Originally the total was slated at $11,000 but donations have kept coming after the event. Lacrosse On March 7 LaCrosse School will host the Whitman County Speech, Spelling and Math contest for fifth through eighth graders.
