Lacrosse LaCrosse All-Purpose 4H Club will have its first meeting of the year next Wednesday, Oct. 10, at 6:30 p.m. at the LaCrosse School library. Youngsters interested in joining the club are urged to attend. The club offers programs in beef, swine, horse, exploring, farm animals, sewing and shooting sports to children from kindergarten through high school, although some projects are limited to third graders and older. Former Whitman County Commissioner Hollis Jamison of Garfield was awarded a $50 Tanks of Thanks fuel card from CHS, parent company of Cenex, for his work helping feed local residents. Jamison said he drives from Garfield to Spokane twice a month to pick up food that feeds more than 135 families and seniors. He delivers between 3,000 and 4,000 pounds from Second Harvest in Spokane to Palouse, Garfield, Farmington and Elberton. Prescription drug take-back will be Saturday, Sept. 29, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Whitman Hospital & Medical Center. Residents with unused prescription at home can take advantage of the prescription drug take-back program. Whitman Hospital and Medical Center is partnering with local law enforcement to receive and dispose of prescription drugs. The day is part of a program planned by the Drug Enforcement Agency. About a year ago, when Columbia Bank was new to Colfax, they were looking for a way to express positive customer service, a strong value of the bank. They looked at a number of other Columbia Bank branches and the things they did for their customers. A number of branches serve cookies in the lobby one day a week, and the staff at Colfax really liked the idea. Dusty Art and Colene Sager hosted the Washington State Flying Farmers in their home Saturday. Eighteen additional members attended the annual business meeting and potluck. Word has been received of the death of Gunelia Stueckle Fowler, Boise, daughter of the late Edwin and Anna Stueckle. Lacrosse LaCrosse Community Pride has interviewed potential store operators who are serious about operating the grocery store and report they are getting close to making a selection. It is possible that the store could be open by late fall which is the board’s intent. 8 years ago September 23, 1887 Wednesday night about 11:45 p.m. Sexton’s sawmill in the north end of town caught fire and was entirely consumed. Total loss, including the planing mill and all machinery, was placed at between $5,000 and $6,000, and there was $2,500 insurance on the mill. Loss of lumber was about $300. Katie Bailey has called western Whitman County home since grade school. Katie and Steve live in LaCrosse, and she teaches in Endicott, where she began in 1999.
