Lamont Sandi Swannack and Steven Engles along with their friend, Keith Pigott from Tacoma, recently traveled to Alaska to hunt coastal black bears. They flew into Ketchikan and then boarded a DeHavilland Beaver float plane for the trip to Prince of Wales Island. They rented a Suburban and drove to Craig, Alaska, where they stayed at the Kingfisher Lodge. They hunted with the Suburban for the first few days and then changed to a 16 foot skiff. P.E.O. Fourteen members attended the Chapter AF meeting at Peace Lutheran Church May 29 with Lynn Nelson hostess. A 100th birthday observance for Bernadine Pyborn Whitmore has been scheduled during the Whitman County Historical Society Ice Cream Social at the Perkins House June 24. She will mark her 100th birthday June 27. She was born on that date in 1912 just outside of Wilcox and lived on a farm there. She and Irvine (Rusty) Whitmore were married Jan. 9, 1930, and they made their home south of Colfax on the Airport Road for 76 years. Mr. Whitmore died in January of 2009 at age 100. A new writers group marked their first meeting Tuesday at the Palouse Library at 6 p.m. Organizer Steve Gill said all writers in the area are encouraged to attend the monthly sessions which on the first Tuesday of the month. “We’re not trying to be exclusive.
