About a year ago, when Columbia Bank was new to Colfax, they were looking for a way to express positive customer service, a strong value of the bank. They looked at a number of other Columbia Bank branches and the things they did for their customers. A number of branches serve cookies in the lobby one day a week, and the staff at Colfax really liked the idea. Staff members take turns ordering cookie dough from Otis Spunkmeyer, and they have four customer favorites that they bake most frequently. They don’t have a complete kitchen at the bank, b...

After falling below the minimum number of 13 members in recent years and the closing of an agreement with the Palouse Arts Council to keep up the building, Palouse Grange No. 177 has begun anew. After the Arts Council agreement phased out last summer after not being able to come to terms on a price to buy the hall, a new movement began this spring to rekindle the local Grange chapter. “We just wanted to be able to use the Grange Hall building and to work on it,” said Heidi Kite, the new Pal...
8 years ago September 23, 1887 Wednesday night about 11:45 p.m. Sexton’s sawmill in the north end of town caught fire and was entirely consumed. Total loss, including the planing mill and all machinery, was placed at between $5,000 and $6,000, and there was $2,500 insurance on the mill. Loss of lumber was about $300. The proprietors have 160,000 feet of logs in the stream above town. It is unfortunate to lose the sawmill as the unusual demand for building activity calls for a supply that can not be met. The city fathers have taken a step in t...

You can easily spend $200 for a basic pair, and if you spring for add-ons like anti-glare lenses or designer frames the price can double. If you’re like most retirees, and are paying full out-of-pocket prices every time you get a new pair of glasses, here are a few...
