Katie Bailey has called western Whitman County home since grade school. Katie and Steve live in LaCrosse, and she teaches in Endicott, where she began in 1999. Leann Bafus was her master teacher when she did her student teaching in LaCrosse. The second of five children, Katie is closest to Rachel, who lives in Silverdale. An AARP driver class will be in Colfax Oct. 1 and 2 from 1 to 5 p.m. each day in the Public Service Building at Colfax. Pre-registration is required. The fee for materials is $12 for AARP members of $14 for non-members. The eight hour refresher course is for experienced drivers 50 and older. The course addresses the age-related changes that can affect driving ability and behavior, and ways to compensate. Dusty The Rev. Floyd and Judy Overstreet have officially retired from serving the Country Bible Church. They have served the congregation for 14 years. Lacrosse LaCrosse fifth and sixth graders hiked to the summit of Kamiak Butte Sept. 13. They have been studying topographical maps and elevation in social studies. They found an elevation marker pounded into a boulder. They also found a geo-cache with a stamp of Chief Kamiaken and a booklet where they wrote their names. Hooper Many of the Hooper youth attended the Palouse Empire Fair with their cattle projects. Lane Hannas’ steer won the purple ribbon in his market weight class and competed in the FFA Market finals class, where he placed sixth overall. Wylie, Wild West book Tekoa return Western music star Wylie Gustafson and his band will return to the Empire Theater in Tekoa next Friday, Sept. 28, at 7 p.m. Gustafson is now based in Montana near where he grew up. Seven weeks after he was quickly removed from Tekoa and jailed in Colfax following the death of three men in his bar at Tekoa, Milford “Curley” Gardner walked out of Whitman superior court a free man. A jury of 12 men ruled his was not guilty of killing a harvest hand by hitting him with a pistol. The Palouse Prairie Foundation is now accepting mini-grant proposals to promote the conservation and restoration of Palouse Prairie and to raise public awareness of the scarce ecosystem. The grant program is for students, teachers, conservationists, landowners and others interested in conserving and restoring remnants of Palouse Prairie. Grants range from $50 to $500. Whitman County commissioners unanimously approved changes to county zoning laws that would allow development of natural gas power plants by private companies. Commissioners Pat O’Neill and Michael Largent voted Monday morning to change code language that allowed only the development of such plants by public entities to include private developments. Whew! I know many of you were involved with the fair last week. It was the first time for me, and I enjoyed meeting community members at the hospital booth. I was impressed by the many volunteer hours that are required to make the fair a success. Thanks to all for supporting the fair through attendance, volunteering and/or buying animals. Jill Swannack of Lamont was the winner of the Kindle Touch prize in a drawing of entries from the adult segment of Whitman Library’s 2012 Summer Reading program. More than 150 adults submitted book reviews to receive local prizes and have their names submitted for the drawing. Dusty The Dusty community has royalty residing within its confines. Steve Maki won the Palouse Empire Fair Wheat King award for the second year in a row. Mashayla Morris, daughter of Luke and Jennifer Morris, received blue ribbons on both of her pigs during showing at the Palouse Empire Fair. Her brother Quincy received a ribbon in his showing of his calf, Grease, in the Little Cowpoke division. The miniature tables and chairs are home for Debbie Largent, who is working happily in her kindergarten classroom at Jennings Elementary, Colfax. Debbie always knew she would be a teacher, so no agonizing decisions for her. She and her husband Brian were both born and reared in Colfax. Brian and Debbie dated a little in high school and all the way through college. After a year at Multnomah School of the Bible, Brian went to WSU and graduated in agricultural mechanization. Dahmen to mark sixth fall event An old fashioned Sunday in Autumn will return to Dahmen Barn in Uniontown Sunday, Sept. 16, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. This sixth annual free event features a pie baking contest with sales of pie ala mode following the judging and a silent auction of desserts which are contained in beautifully decorated boxes made by the resident artists. Whitman County’s WSU extension agent Steven Van Vleet is looking to add a touch of history to his annual calendar spotlighting barns in Whitman County. For three years, Van Vleet’s calendars have been popular fixtures in homes and offices around the county. The $5 calendar is a top seller, with proceeds benefitting the county’s rural library district. Each month features a different shot of a barn in that month’s weather.
