    Two programs are scheduled next Wednesday, June 27, at the St. John library. A family concert at 1 p.m. features the Traveling Light duo who will add musical fun to the Summer Reading program. Teens age 12-18 are invited to Spy Training at 6:30 p.m. to learn about the hidden world of spies and create an alternate identity while they solve crimes of international intrigue.     Whitman County Library offers prizes for the countywide adult and teen summer reading programs. Teens in junior high and high school will be entered for the countywide grand prize and weekly drawings for every hour of reading. The teen grand prize for 2012 is an iPod Nano. Adults who read or listen to three books and write a brief review will be entered to win a prize at their local library and be entered to win a Kindle Touch as the countywide prize.     Traveling Light, a versatile music duo specializing in light jazz and pop favorites from Bothell, will be featured in Whitman County Library’s third annual summer concert series set to visit 14 towns during the last week in June. Vocalist Mary Michaelson and keyboardist Lou Lippman will perform music for children including traditional songs and activities at eight of the concerts as part of the regular summer reading program.     Community Band of the Palouse, formerly Pullman Community Band, has booked another busy summer concert schedule for the summer. They will be at the Moscow Farmer’s market next Saturday and plan their three-stop celebration of the Fourth of July at Johnson.     Oakesdale third and fourth graders came to the Farmington Library and Community Center to learn about the town’s history and the part it played in the development of the Palouse. Colleen Duty, who was born and raised in Farmington, gave a lesson on the history of the town, its people and the homes.     Pullman Chamber of Commerce has issued its annual call for volunteers and contributions for the Fourth of July celebration in Sunnyside Park. Volunteers are needed for children’s activities, food and beverage service, sales of novelty items and clean-up. Also, the chamber has issued a call for donations of fruit pies and other desserts.     Two class sessions on boating safety have been scheduled at the end of the month. Boaters between 12 to 40 years of age are now required to have the certified card when operating a boat with an engine of 15 horsepower or more. The required instruction extends over two nights with classes set June 20-21 and June 26 and June 28 from 6 to 9:30 p.m. in the Public Service Building at Colfax.     Palouse swim team manager Kelly Dow issued a call this week for swim team recruits. Interested swimmers are urged to sign up at the pool June 19 at noon to register for the team and celebrate with popsicles. The practice schedule will begin the next day, June 20.     Colfax School board approved three staff hirings at their meeting Monday night. Heather York was approved as a sixth-grade teacher at Jennings Elementary, non-continuing for 2012-13. She takes the place for a teacher who will be on a leave of absence.     Extras patrols aimed at keeping drunken drivers off the roadways will be conducted July 4-5. The Whitman County Sheriff’s Office, WSU Police, Pullman and Colfax Police departments and the Washington State Patrol will participate in the extra emphasis patrols. The patrols are funded by a grant from Washington Traffic Safety Commission and supported by the Spokane County Target Zero Task Force.
