Whitman County Humane Society seeks sponsors and vendors for the fourth annual Mutt Strutt scheduled at Pullman’s Reaney Park Saturday, Sept. 29, to raise funds for the dog park adjacent to AnimalHaven, the WCHS pet shelter. The park is now under construction. It will be the first off-leash dog park in Whitman County. Funding comes solely from donations by individuals and businesses. Dusty Shirley Eggers said there is a very small crop of peaches this year at Warm Springs Ranch orchard along the Snake River at Penawawa. The cool, wet spring meant the bees did not come out to pollinate the blossoms. Dick and Suzy McNeilly have had her daughter Christina and two sons, Mason and Aidan, visiting for the past two and a half weeks from Camp LeJeune, N.C. Shandra Bohn and James Nichols are a busy cooking couple. They are the ultimate foodies, subscribing to seven food and cooking magazines and watching the Food Channel as much as possible. They are pleased to be sharing their ideas and talent with two sororities at the University of Idaho. Shandra works for Kappa Delta, and her husband cooks for Delta Delta Delta. Kelly Melville of Lamont this summer participated in a Volunteer for Peace trip to Estonia. She and students from the United States and Europe worked on projects in the village of Kopu, Estonia. Kelly will be a member of the senior class this year at Sprague High School. She is the daughter of Liz Melville and the late Burke Melville of Lamont. Long-time resident of LaCrosse, Theona Augusta Marsh celebrated her 100th birthday Monday, Aug. 7, with family and friends at a party in Kennewick. Theona and her husband, Gene, farmed in Winona until retiring to LaCrosse. Her family includes three children, 10 grandchildren, 23 great-grandchildren and 26 great-great-grandchildren. 8 years ago August 12, 1887 There was a runaway six miles from town on the Spring Flat road Sunday. Five men in the employ of Bleeker, Spencer and Hoar were on their way to Pullman with Messrs. Bleeker, Spencer and McMahon following in a buggy. A band of loose horses frightened the buggy team, until it was impossible to hold them. The front of the buggy box was pushed from its fastenings. Schweitzer Engineering Laboratories, Inc., will host an open house at its new facility in Lewiston Aug. 9, 2012, from 3 to 7 p.m. The event will feature tours of the manufacturing floor, product displays and information about the company and its industry. Hog Heaven set for Dahmen Hog Heaven Big Band will play at Dahmen Barn Aug. 25 from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. They play tunes from The Great American Song Book for listening or dancing. Ysabeaux Ng, daughter of Eddy and Molly Ng of Colfax, received a gold medal at the national meeting of FCCLA at Orlando, Fla., for her entry in the applied technology category. Taking care of visiting grandkids and taking them to swimming lessons in LaCrosse is keeping Jeannine Henley Larkin of Hay busy right now. Her daughter’s children enjoy a visit to Hay with recreation in LaCrosse. Jeannine’s ongoing project is her work with the LaCrosse Community Pride. LCP members find it challenging to keep their project, which is not just a store, moving ahead. As winter wheat ripens for harvest, cranes continue to add pieces to some of the turbines at Palouse Wind’s 58-turbine wind farm in this vista from Highway 271 south of Rosalia. Crews have erected many of the towers for the north portion of the wind farm over the past month and have been placing naselles on their tops at a rate of about one a day for the past two weeks. Blades for the turbines are anticipated to arrive in the next couple of weeks. The wind farm is expected to be up and running by the end of the year....
The end is near for construction of the Port of Whitman’s $14 million fiber optic network link through Whitman County. Joe Poire, port executive director, reported to port commissioners at their regular meeting last Thursday, Aug. 2, that the Department of Transportation had issued its final permit, clearing the way for the strand fiber optic cable to be laid along Highway 27 from Oakesdale to Tekoa. “So the light is on at the end of the tunnel,” said Port Commissioner Tom Kammerzell. The Port of Whitman County is getting out of the water business. Port commissioners approved a contract at their regular meeting last Thursday, Aug. 2, that would transfer the port’s water and sewer systems to the Asotin County Public Utilities District. The district will use them to provide services to the tenants at the Wilma Industrial Park. The move means rates will likely go down for most port tenants, said Debbie Snell, port properties and development manager. Most tenants at Wilma are served with four-inch metered hook-ups.
