Colfax-Palouse Direct Seed Association will resume monthly breakfast seminar series Wednesday, Oct. 24, at the United Methodist Church on Mill Street in Colfax. Speaker will be Mark Richter, a farmer from Endicott who direct seeds his entire farm and contracts direct seed planting for neighbors. Colfax Councilwoman Jeanette Solimine at the Oct. 1 city council suggested the city should enforce its animal ban ordinance or allow residents to keep animals in town. She said she wanted to bring the topic up again because she believes proponents of in-town chicken raising now view the city as “somehow being mean” by leaving the ban in place. A set of three “candlestick” traffic control markers which were placed at the intersection of Main and Thorn have been removed. Police Chief Rick McNannay said the traffic markers were removed by the Department of Transportation crews. The chief placed the markers at the intersection to discourage northbound motorists from ignoring the “right turn only” restriction on the curb lane of Main Street. The will of William M. Gnaedinger of Pullman, filed Sept. 28 in probate court, bequeaths $4,000 each to the general funds of WSU and the University of Oregon, the Wallace Public Library and the Wallace Elks Club in Idaho. Mr. Gnaedinger was raised in Wallace and maintained contact with his hometown during his adult years. The family suggests memorial contributions go to the Wallace Library and Elks Club. Steven A. Eagan, 21, Spokane, was booked into the county jail early Oct. 4 on probable charges of possession of marijuana, drug paraphernalia and methamphetamine. The Colfax police arrest report said Eagan was a passenger in a Ford Explorer which had been seen parked at McDonald Park. The Explorer was stopped on Cedar Street, and Eagan handed over a pipe and later a baggie of marijuana after the Colfax officer asked if drugs were in the vehicle. Garfield-Palouse Middle School Rockets Class, led by science teacher Phil Weagraff, continued its tradition of research and design of model rockets this fall. Kit-built rockets were recently blasted off on the middle school ballfield. Students in the elective course started with research on flight techniques used to lift planes, helicopters, rockets and birds. Many of the rockets blasted several hundred feet into the air. Berne Davis, a Colfax High grad from the depression years who wound up driving a tank in Europe during World War II, was among a group of 34 veterans aboard the Southwest Airlines honor flight which departed Spokane Oct. 3 for a trip to the nation’s capital. Davis, who now makes his home at the Courtyard in Colfax, was accompanied by his son, Gerald Davis, who talked his dad into making the trip. Karrie Marsh moved from the Yakima Valley via Bridgeport to Colfax when her husband, Buck, was hired as the new principal at Colfax High School. Farming has been their family vocation for generations. Her maternal grandparents, and now uncles, are orchardists in the Yakima Valley. Whitman County Library will soon offer $66,000 in new digital titles as part of a grant received by the 30 libraries in the Washington Anytime Library consortium. The federal funding comes from the Library Services and Technology Act, administered through the Washington State Library.
