Hospital Auxiliary Whitman Hospital Auxiliary’s June meeting was at Events on Main in Colfax. Leona Herman, Dorla Scholz, Harriet Mackleit and Darlene Kroll were honored for their years of service and dedication to the auxiliary. They were presented with a framed certificate and small gift. Everyone was thanked for their hard work and many hours put in for the annual Mayfest. Brian Soncarty and Joy McNaughton have been awarded the scholarships that the Auxiliary gives annually. Peck son born Jason Carl Peck was born June 6, 2012, at Whitman Hospital and Medical Center at nine pounds, nine ounces, to Laurel and Samuel Peck. Maternal grandparents are Robert and Lurene Fleshman of Pasco. Paternal grandparent is Crystal Peck of Fenn, Idaho. This is the couple’s first baby. An exhibit of Whitman County’s rural heritage will be on display in the new LaCrosse Library for Farmer’s Festival June 16. The library is located in the Market which is being renovated by the LaCrosse Community Pride Group. The exhibit features 30 images from our county’s past including farm scenes, railroading, founding families, businesses and other subjects. I continue to be reminded of what a great staff we have at Whitman Hospital and Medical Center. I regularly receive comments from patients and family members about the kindness and caring of our staff. The week of June 14-21 we honor our NACs (certified nursing assistants). These individuals are vitally important to the care and well-being of our patients. They are the ones who provide personal care such as feeding and bathing, as well as assistance to the bathroom. Like many people, Nelson Duran did not figure out what he really wanted to do immediately after high school. He came to the United States 25 years ago with a scholarship to study agriculture. Nelson’s parents were born in Spain and moved to Cedar, Honduras, where he was born. They left the small town and moved to the capital city, Tegucigulpa, when he was six years old. An unwelcome presence turned up in front of houses and businesses around the county this week. The husky sign was made by Greg Nolan as a fundraiser for his O’Nolan Relay For Life Team. The sign was first planted 10 days ago in an unsuspecting homeowner’s (and die-hard WSU fan) yard on Thorn Hill, Colfax. For a donation, the sign is removed and designated to go elsewhere.... City Slicker was hurting, smoke pouring off of it and gears slipping as Tyler Startin of Dusty backed up his machine for a full-speed run. Startin slid his combine, named Bass Ackwards after modifications moved the rear end to the front, into fourth gear and pushed to almost eight miles an hour before delivering the blow that finally took the Seattle-based City Slicker machine out of commission. Lamont Sandi Swannack and Steven Engles along with their friend, Keith Pigott from Tacoma, recently traveled to Alaska to hunt coastal black bears. They flew into Ketchikan and then boarded a DeHavilland Beaver float plane for the trip to Prince of Wales Island. They rented a Suburban and drove to Craig, Alaska, where they stayed at the Kingfisher Lodge. They hunted with the Suburban for the first few days and then changed to a 16 foot skiff. Evan Jones, son of Jeff Jones and Sabrina Jones, was named valedictorian of the St. John-Endicott High School Class of 2012 with a 4.0 grade average.
