News has been received of the death of Victor Stueckle, Walla Walla, Sunday, May 6. Mr. Stueckle was born in the Dusty area in 1924. Services will be at the College Place Presbyterian Church at 11 Tuesday, May 15. Members of the Colfax High School jazz band show the first-place trophy they won Saturday at Mt. Hood Community College in Gresham, Ore. Under the direction of Mike Morgan, they placed first place in Division 3 which included eight schools with enrollment up to 600. Colfax has competed at the Mt. Response to the Colfax Parks use survey totaled 249 April 26 with one day left before the Friday deadline for returning survey forms. The survey form was mailed out as part of the process to develop a new five-year plan for parks and recreations in Colfax. The current five-year plan will expire at the end of this year. The total number of dogs licenses issued in Colfax as of Friday totaled 192. Colfax begins its dog license renewals in March but continues through the year. This year was the first time dog owners were required under a new state law to show their pets have been vaccinated for rabies. In some instances this year, issuance of Colfax dog tags was delayed until dog owners could get their dogs vaccinated and present the certification. First Wind CEO Paul Gaynor presents a scholarship plaque to Heidi Jamison of Garfield after Tuesday morning’s groundbreaking for the company’s Naff Ridge wind farm. Colfax moose spotters April 26 revived belief of a suspected moose birth in the south hill area of Colfax. A newborn moose has been spotted in the area just south of Colfax by Terry Weitz. Volunteers will meet for the annual clean up of the Garfield Cemetery Saturday, May 5. Jim Storms, secretary of the cemetery district, asks for volunteers to bring gloves, rakes, shovels, weed trimmers and whatever else may be needed. Removal of downed limbs and gopher holes, raking and cleaning need to be done, Storms said. The effort aims to have the cemetery ready for Memorial Day. Whitman County Library supporters donated $1,473 during its annual Penny Drive this year. Each library branch designated a project for the money. They will range from special children’s reading incentives to summer reading programs for all ages. For the seventh year in a row, Vicki Hatley’s Daycare children, family and friends won the Penny Drive local competition with $216.80 collected for kid’s programs at the Colfax library and storytime outreach to licensed facilities.
