Colfax moose spotters April 26 revived belief of a suspected moose birth in the south hill area of Colfax. A newborn moose has been spotted in the area just south of Colfax by Terry Weitz. The newborn is suspected to have been born to a moose who has been observed at several locations in the south area of town. Residents who observed that moose believe it was a pregnant female. Volunteers will meet for the annual clean up of the Garfield Cemetery Saturday, May 5. Jim Storms, secretary of the cemetery district, asks for volunteers to bring gloves, rakes, shovels, weed trimmers and whatever else may be needed. Removal of downed limbs and gopher holes, raking and cleaning need to be done, Storms said. The effort aims to have the cemetery ready for Memorial Day. Whitman County Library supporters donated $1,473 during its annual Penny Drive this year. Each library branch designated a project for the money. They will range from special children’s reading incentives to summer reading programs for all ages. For the seventh year in a row, Vicki Hatley’s Daycare children, family and friends won the Penny Drive local competition with $216.80 collected for kid’s programs at the Colfax library and storytime outreach to licensed facilities. The plan for a brick building has been abandoned and the structure will be built entirely of wood above the foundation. When Too Slim and the Tail Draggers opened their set at the Tekoa Empire Theatre Saturday they faced a nearly full house. The band’s reputation as a blues-rock group had preceded them as they have played in the Pacific Northwest for over 20 years. James Hughes, 52, Endicott, has been summoned to appear in court May 18, after 19 counts of first degree theft were filed against him Tuesday in Whitman County Superior court. The charges allege Hughes took loads of wheat over a three year span. Each of the 19 different charges alleges wheat was taken on a different dates beginning April 24, 2009, and ending July 6 of last year. The charges were filed by Prosecutor Denis Tracy.
