A designated parking plan for approximately 60 camper units in the horse barn area of the Palouse Empire Fairground was presented to fair directors at Monday night’s fair board meeting. Fair Manager Bob Reynolds explained the key aim of the plan was safety. He said random parking of camper units, particularly self-contained units, created unsafe conditions in recent fairs. An AARP driver safety program will be May 7 and 8 in the Public Service Building at Colfax from 1 to 5 p.m. each day. The eight hour course, conducted in two half-day sessions, is for drivers 50 and older. It addresses age-related changes that can affect driving ability and behavior and teaches ways to compensate. The curriculum is designed to remind senior drivers of skills they once learned but perhaps fail to use regularly. Farmers have until June 1 to submit applications for the 2010 crop year Supplemental Revenue Assistance Payments Program, or SURE. Producers who lost at least 10 percent production on a crop grown in a disaster designated county or contiguous county are eligible for payments. Whitman County was declared a contiguous county. Palouse School will conduct kindergarten and preschool screening and pre-registration Thursday, May 10, from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. in the elementary school. Colfax school board approved the hiring of two part-time staff members Monday night. Connie Ellis was hired as Colfax High cheerleader advisor for football and basketball. She will replace Rhonda Pittman. Ellis serves as Colfax City Clerk and has been a volunteer coordinator for the Distinguished Young Women competition in Colfax. She lives in Diamond with her husband of 56 years, Jerry, but she spends much of her time in Colfax. Shirley not only works at Whitman Hospital, but she is president of Whitman Community Hospital Auxiliary, and she is active in Thrifty Grandmothers Club.
