    Two hundred and fifty-two students from Whitman County and Asotin schools competed in the annual Whitman County Speech, Spelling, Geography and Math Contest last Wednesday in Garfield. The contest, which includes six categories at four grade levels, was hosted by Garfield School District. Tina Coles, the Language Arts teacher at the Garfield-Palouse Middle School, was the organizer and master of ceremonies for the event, assisted by secretary Patty Cottrill and the rest of the Garfield-Palouse Middle School staff.     The sixth annual Art Demonstration Day will be April 14 at Dahmen Barn from 11 am to 4 p.m. This year’s theme is creating with recycled or found objects.     A total of 135 residents donated $1,020 in non-perishable food for the 12th annual “Food for Fines” drive conducted by Whitman County Library. Donations came in throughout Whitman County.
