    The seventh annual penny drive to fund programs at the library in Oakesdale will be from March 26 to April 14. Oakesdale students from kindergarten through fifth grade will participate with a goal of $50 or more. If the goal is reached Librarian Michele Wright will provide cupcakes and punch for all. Collection jars will be at Crossett’s Food Market and the library. Children are making butterflies and caterpillars and learning about springtime and all the things that will be growing soon.   • Kindergarten screening at JES

    Kindergarten registration screening at Jennings Elementary School will be Thursday, April 19, 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Sessions will give youngsters a chance to meet kindergarten teachers and register for the next school year. Parents are urged to call the JES office to make an appointment by April 18. Proof of age and immunization information will be required.     Larry Whitesitt of Fairfield has rented the Empire Theater in Tekoa to show two wilderness films free April 14 beginning at 2 p.m. A writer and former bush pilot, he plans to show “Lords of Nature,” a film about the wolf recovery in Yellowstone Park, and “Northern Flight of Dreams.” During the 1960s and 1970s Whitesitt was a bush pilot who flew deHavilland Beaver sea planes and ski planes out of the Yukon into British Columbia and Northwest Territories.     The exhibit for the month of April at Artisans at the Dahmen Barn is “Northwest Back Country, Fin and Feathers” featuring artists David Gressard of Moscow and John Bergen Jr. from Peirce. Using different mediums, each artist achieves great detail in their art. John uses a torch and welder, and Dave paints with acrylic paint and brush.     Athenaeum Twenty members met March 16 at the home of Kay Van Dyke for their semi annual business meeting .The first order of business was to complete club obligations for 2011-2012. The Civic Improvement committee suggested a $100 donation to the library’s “Whitman County Rural Heritage” project. The library committee suggested buying “Women and their Gardens: A History from Elizabethan Era to Today”. Both items were approved.     Lindsay Webber won the Colfax Distinguished Young Woman competition Saturday night to top a field of 10 competitors for the title. Webber, who sang a soprano solo for her talent competition, also won the talent, self expression and interview segments of the competition. Wanda Alderman of Steptoe presented a program on Pysanda eggs, a Ukranian art form of decorating Easter eggs in intricate patterns using beeswax and successive dyes of different colors.
