    St. John Kolten Cole June 21 graduated from basic training at the National Infantry Museum where he got to march across the field made up of patches of grass taken from every battle involving US soldiers. His mom, Shelley Cole, and aunt, Debbie Halterman, attended. After 13 months of a process to be accepted by the Army because of all the medical paperwork he had to provide due to his childhood asthma and bad knees, he was sworn in to the Army Jan. 3.     St. John There is no parking for the next two weeks in front of the St. John Post Office. The city decided to extend the Park Street project to the front of the post office. There is parking across the street and walk-in access is as normal. Christian Life Assembly June 28 will host a barbecue and the music of Kate Feldkeller and Hillary Waston.     St. John St. John is gearing up for this weekend, with an estimated 3,500 to 5,000 people coming to watch the US sprint boats. Starting today, campers will arrive to locate next to Webb’s Slough. Friday starting at 5 p.m., the sprint boats and their owners will line the street of downtown St. John so residents can get a close-up look at the boats, meet the racers and take photos.     St. John St. John reading program for the summer will start Wednesday, June 12, at 1 p.m. and will run through the summer every Wednesday. Call the library to sign up. The class of 2013 graduated this last Saturday with 25 students getting their diplomas. The morning started off cold and rainy, but the afternoon proved to be a sunny one for all the parties through town.     St. John St. John football and baseball teams plan a car wash to raise money for camp and equipment at the St. John bus garage June 1 from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. The St. John-Endicott class of 2013, will graduate June 2 at 2 p.m. in the St. John High School’s gym.     St. John With just three weeks until St. John gets invaded with thousands of fans for the start of boat races, Amanda Webb says the crew is working hard to get lawns mowed and the slough filled. The first race will be June 15, and she promises it’s going to be bigger and better this year. The Whitman Ladies of the Nile lunch and style show had more than 100 attending from as far away as Spokane. Door prizes were a big hit with many getting great gifts.   • Davis duo marks 65th years

    St. John Harry and Erma Davis this year marked their 65th wedding anniversary. They were married May 8, 1948. Harry said they grew up together in the small town of Lamont. They were the first couple to get married in the Community Church in Sprague. The first had burned down and was being rebuilt at the time. They made their home at the Lamont farm where they had three children. They moved to Sunset for about 10 years and then built a home in St. John where they still live.     St. John The wind that came in Saturday didn’t dampen the spirits of St. John and all the events. The hog jog started at 8:3O a.m. and had a good turn out; the FFA and 4H kids did a great job of showing. The parade kicked off at noon with the pharmacy girls as grand marshall while the SJE band had a YMCA theme. The 17th annual Pig Putt was Sunday.     St. John The St. John Stock Show kicks off this weekend. Students will be released at noon. The weekend is filled with fitting and showing of lambs, hogs and steers.     St. John Eugene Schmidt, a 1968 St. John graduate, has an interest in the campaign by Bridgeport to land President Obama as a commencement speaker this year. Schmidt, son of St. John resident Eileen Schmidt, served as superintendent at Bridgeport. He left the Bridgeport district two years ago and is now superintendent for a school district in Los Alamos, N. M. Schmidt received his education degree at Washington State College.... Full story
