Dr. Harvey G. Kragt

The funeral service for Dr. Harvey G. Kragt, 72, retired Colfax chiropractor, will be Saturday, Aug. 15, at First Baptist Church in Colfax at 10 a.m. A graveside service will follow at the Colfax Cemetery. Public viewing Thursday and Friday, will be from 9 to 5 at Bruning Funeral Home in Colfax. Dr. Kragt died Saturday, Aug. 8, at Sacred Heart Medical Center in Spokane.

Born Jan. 28, 1937, in George, Iowa, he graduated from Rock Valley High School in Iowa in 1955, and attended Nettleton Business College. He then co-owned Kragt Furniture in Rock Valley for 10 years. He married Elaine DeJager in Carmel, Iowa, Feb. 18, 1959. He then attended Palmer College of Chiropractic in Davenport, Iowa. He graduated in 1971 and the family moved west to Colfax where he ran a successful Chiropractic practice for 21 years.

He was an active member of First Baptist Church in Colfax, president of the Colfax Kiwanis club, and served on the Colfax School Board. He was one of the original 14 directors of the Bank of Whitman. He was an active member of the Christian Chiropractors Association and the Chiropractic Society of Washington. He was an avid collector of model trains, and loved spending time watching trains. He was knowledgeable of train routes throughout the United States. He and Elaine enjoyed traveling in their motor home, by rail on Amtrak, and by air on their 15 trips to Italy and other European countries. He spent winters in Mesa, Ariz.

He enjoyed sharing his experiences with his daily coffee friends. He also enjoyed music and watching sports, especially the Mariners. He spent many hours following his grandchildren’s sporting events and activities.

Surviving are his wife of 50 years, Elaine, Colfax; four sons, Dr. Michael Kragt, Padova, Italy; Wayne Kragt, Redmond; Dr. Warren Kragt, Ritzville and Kevin Kragt, Spokane; four brothers, Dr. Ed Kragt, Rock Rapids, Iowa; Dr. Preston Kragt, Sebring, Fla .; Dr. Joe Kragt, Bella Vista, Ark., and Dr. John Kragt, Sprit Lake, Iowa; and nine grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a grandson, Malachi.

The family suggests that memorial contributions be made to Hope Haven in Rock Valley, Iowa, or Union Gospel Mission in Spokane.

Mildred J. McKenzie

A memorial service for Mildred J. McKenzie, 85, will be today, Thursday, Aug. 13, at 3 p.m. at Kramer Funeral Home, Palouse. The Rev. Corey Laughary will officiate the service.

Mrs. McKenzie died on Thursday, July 23, 2009, at Avalon Healthcare in Pullman.

Born Feb. 12, 1924, at Thief River Falls, Minn., to George and Bonnie Slater Shepherd, she attended school in Montana and graduated from high school at Helena.

She married Harold E. McKenzie on July 4, 1968, at Coeur d’Alene. They made their home near Palouse where they farmed. Mr. McKenzie died in April of 2000.

She enjoyed quilting, crocheting, needlework, gardening, camping, fishing, and clam digging.

Survivors include one son, Karl Jones, Puyallup; one daughter, Donna Garden, Port Orchard; one brother, Harold Shepherd, and one sister, Gladys Tovey, both of Helena; six grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.

Delmar E. Murray

A graveside service for Delmar E. Murray, 74, retired CIA communication specialist, will be at the Greenwood Cemetery in Palouse Saturday, Aug. 15, at 1 p.m. with the Rev. Kathy Kramer officiating. Military honors will be conducted by a U. S. Army honor guard and the Potlatch Post will participate. Mr. Murray died of cancer late July 27, 2009, at the Spokane Hospice House. He was cremated.

Born May 21, 1935, at Colfax, to Ira Edgar and Vera M. Trimble Murray, he attended Palouse schools and graduated from Palouse High School with the class of 1953. Mr. Murray attended the Spokane Telegraph School and later worked for the Union Pacific Railroad for about five years. During this time he took an interest in ham radio and built his own radio transmitter.

He served in the United States Army from April of 1958 and was discharged on April 7, 1960. In 1961 he joined the Central Intelligence Agency and was trained in electronic communications systems. Del completed a 24-year career with the CIA in 1988 after serving in many of the most difficult locations around the world.

He moved to Spokane to the Harvard Park retirement home to be near his family.

Survivors include one brother, Wilford Murray, Spokane.

Daniel R. Peterson

A memorial service for Daniel R. (Don) Peterson, 89, a retired WSU dairy farm worker, was Saturday Aug. 8, at the Trinity Lutheran Church in Pullman with Pastor Tor Berg officiating. Mr. Peterson was cremated and inurnment will be at the Mendenhall Cemetery in Onaway, Idaho.

Mr. Peterson died July 28, 2009, at the Pullman Regional Hospital.

Born Oct. 20, 1919 at Isabel, S.D., to Daniel John and Tilda Larson Peterson, he attended schools at Isabel before moving with his family to Hayden, Idaho, where he finished his schooling.

He worked in the Civilian Conservation Corps from October of 1937 until April of 1938. Mr. Peterson later moved to Pullman and worked for area farmers. He worked for Vern Henson on their farm in the Union Flat Creek area from 1955 to 1965 when he was employed by the WSU Department of Animal Science. He worked at the dairy farm until he retired in 1986.

He was a 50-year plus member of the Ewartsville Grange and received his Golden Wheat Sheaf certificate in 2001. He was also a member of the Trinity Lutheran Church, a lifetime member of the Moose Lodge, and a member of the Odd Fellows Lodge.

Survivors include two nephews, Jerry Peterson, Pullman; Erick Peterson, Moscow, and one niece, Karen Adams, Harpster, Idaho.

Roy William Ulrich

A memorial service for Roy William Ulrich, 81, St. John High School graduate, was July 31, at The First Baptist Church of Monroe. Graveside services were at Riverton Crest Cemetery in Monroe.

Mr. Ulrich died July 27, 2009, at his home in Duvall.

Born Aug. 14, 1927, in Oakesdale to Benward and Anna Ulrich, he was raised in St. John and graduated from St. John High School with the class of 1946. He served in the United States Navy as an airplane mechanic during the Korean War from 1950 to 1954.

After serving in the Navy he moved to Burien and worked for the Boeing Co. He and his wife, Delores, were married Nov. 29, 1958. They lived in Burien for several years, and moved in 1965 to Duvall where they raised their family and made their home since.

In 1970 he became a truck driver and contracted with Mayflower until he retired in 1999. He volunteered for Sno Valley Senior Center.

Surviving are his wife, Delores, at the home in Duvall; one son, Brian Ulrich, Duvall; three daughters, Leslie Day, Burien; Karen Carlson, Whidbey Island and Amy Padron, Duvall; four sisters, Margaret Mauer, Spangle; Amy Thomas, Columbus, N.M .; Eileen Anderson, Spirit Lake, Idaho and Wanda Anderson, Kettle Falls; and six grandchildren.

Lyle K. Hendrickx

A mass of Christian burial for Lyle K. Hendrickx, 68, will be today, Thursday, August 13, at 10 a.m. at Sacred Heart Catholic Church at DeSmet. Father Thomas Connolly, S. J. will officiate. Burial will follow at the DeSmet Mission Cemetery.

Rosary was Wednesday at 7 p.m. at the Coeur d’Alene Tribal School gymnasium at DeSmet.

Mr. Hendrickx died of cancer Sunday, Aug. 9, 2009, at his Tensed home.

Born May 24, 1941, at DeSmet to Louis G. and Emma L. Swan Hendrickx, he attended school at Tensed for one year and Tekoa for nine years. He finished high school at Plummer where he graduated in 1960.

Following high school, he farmed near Spokane for two years before moving to San Jose, Calif., where he worked in construction for the next 17 years. He was a heavy equipment operator and worked building telephone and water systems in the San Jose area. In 1980, Lyle moved back to Tensed where he has owned and operated the Circle H Saloon for the past 29 years.

He was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church and an avid hunter and fisherman.

Survivors include one son, David Hendrickx, Oak Hill, Va .; two daughters, Julie Herbert of San Jose, Calif., and Pamela Curley of Plummer, Idaho; two brothers, Russell Hendrickx of Tensed and Terry Hendrickx of Plummer; one sister, Karen Hendrickx of Tensed; eight grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
