Motorcycle rodeo competitors ran through a full slate of events Saturday after waiting a couple of extra hours for the arena grounds at the Palouse Empire Fairground at Mockonema to dry out. The arena had been drenched the day before by Friday’s rains.
The rodeo was part of a three-day rally which was sponsored by the Northwest Classic Motorcycle Club at the fairground. The event, which also featured sales booths, music and a motorcycle show, brought approximately 200 motorcycle enthusiasts.
First riders to arrive Friday had to cope with the rain, but the skies cleared and events went pretty much as planned on the second day, according to Gary (Bootmaker) McGlasson of Spokane, event organizer.
Fourteen riders competed in the rodeo event.
Most of the club members ride vintage cycles, some dating back over 50 years. Motorcycles at the event pre-dated the changes in the industry which have introduced motorcycles to an urban market.
McGlasson said participants enjoyed their first rally at Colfax and hope to make it an annual event. He also credited the Colfax Eagles for being able to get a permit to operate a beer garden on what amounted to a last-minute notice.
Larry Eicholdt of Spokane won best of show honors for a Saturday display of motorcycles, many of them vintage models, along the fair’s walkway outside the arena. Eicholdt displayed his 1946 Indian.
Ken War of Chewelah placed second with a Harley Davidson Twin Cam, and Mike Pagett of Spokane placed third with a Harley Davidson Shovel Head.
Format for the rodeo event requires riders to use the same road machines which brought them to the rally. Minimum engine size is 750 cc, and motorcycles have to be street legal.
The club plans to conduct another rodeo event Saturday at the Rosalia rodeo grounds as part of the Rosalia rally this weekend.
