Greenacres recipe tops lentil contest

The winner of the 2009 National Lentil Festival’s Legendary Lentil Cookoff during the festival at Pullman was Herbed Lentils & Rice submitted by Betty Fulmer of Greenacres. Second place went to Rhubarb Lentil Crisp submitted by Julie Schneider of Pullman. The third place award went to B-L-T Dip submitted by Janice Elder of Charlotte, N.C.

The cookoff is a national competition and this year’s competition had 93 entries. The preliminary round was in late July, and the top six recipes were taken to Reaney Park during the festival for the public tasting. The first 400 tasters in the park judged the recipes.

Preliminary winners also included Maple Chipotle BBQ Lentil Pizza submitted by Viviane Levine of Summerfield, Fla .; Savannah’s Sweet Potato Lentil Fritters, submitted by Jane Harrison Ashworth of The Woodlands, Texas; and Not Your Mother’s Jelly Roll submitted by Wilma Page of Richland.

The Old Post Office Wine Gallery Restaurant of Pullman will feature some of these recipes on their rotating menu.

The 2009 National Lentil Festival Legendary Lentil Cook Off Recipe Booklet is now available at the Pullman Chamber of Commerce for $4. Add $1.25 postage to get one in the mail.

Art opening tonight at WC Winery galley

Gerri Sayler and Stephanie Miller will open a collaborative art installation at the Wawawai Canyon Winery gallery on the Moscow-Pullman highway tonight, Thursday, Sept. 10 from 6 to 8 p.m. During the opening reception, educator and artist Quentin DeWitt will perform an eclectic percussion soundscape created to echo the installation’s theme. The evening festivities will also include complimentary wine tasting.

Constructed of twine and cardboard, “Furrows” plays off the winery barn’s architecture and evokes serpentine curves of Palouse wheat fields. In addition to the installation, Sayler will exhibit small sculptures and collages for a show entitled “Twinings,” in the newly re-opened gallery.

The works will be on display through Oct. 15.
