Colfax netters stop Freeman; host Gorilla girls Saturday

Colfax volleyball team spotted Freeman 18-25 Tuesday in the first game of a non-league opener on the home court and then went on to take the next three games and the match. The win came after the Bulldogs bowed to Pullman and defeated Newport in jamboree rounds here Saturday to start the season.

“We just started to get our serving going,” Coach Sue Doering commented on the turnaround. After the serves started to hit the range, other aspects of the Bulldogs’ game came together.

Rachel Johnson started Colfax 3-0 in the second game, and Brooke Webber posted a run to 11-7.

Sophomore Hannah Harazin had two service points to sustain the lead and freshman Amelie Bruya had a run of five serve points at the end. She hit to two Scottie errors and pegged an ace.

In the fourth game decider, Webber had a six-point run with a pair of aces, and Rachel Johnson served it to 20-14. Kayla Johnson had 11 kills in the last game.

Coach Sue Doering said Kayla Johnson was unstoppable at the net with 29 kills for the match. She also picked up 36 digs.

Rachel Johnson booked 22 assists and had a 25-26 night serving with five aces.

Freshman Bruya hit 17-18 serving with four aces. She also had 18 assists, and Webber finished 11-12 with two aces.

Christa Nyholm booked 28 digs, and Sidney Huber, also a freshman, had a solid night off the bench with four kills in that second game.

In Saturday’s jamboree, which limited clubs to three-game matches, Pullman defeated Colfax 25-18 25-18 and 25-27. Colfax then took a 2-1 win over Newport, 25-11 25-21 23-25.

Kayla Johnson had 31 kills and 22 digs and served 23-25 with five aces, and Rachel Johnson hit 36-37 off the serve line with six aces and booked 30 assists.

The Bulldogs Saturday will host Davenport in a non-leaguer with jayvee action starting at 1 p.m.
