Eleanor M. Cohn
Funeral services for Eleanor M. Cohn, 98, will be Friday, Sept. 18, at 2 p.m. at the Tekoa Community Church with the Rev. Kathy Kramer officiating. Burial will follow at Goldenrod Cemetery. Mrs. Cohn, a retired tax accountant, died Sunday, Sept. 13, 2009, at Tekoa Care Center.
Born Eleanor M. Becker March 31, 1911, at LaGrande, Ore., to Paul and Elsie Snyder Becker, she attended schools at LaGrande and at Tekoa and graduated with the Tekoa High School class of 1928.
She then attended Kinman Business College in Spokane and worked as a cashier for J.C. Penney Co. in Tekoa for seven years.
She married Dave Cohn July 14, 1936, at Seattle, and they made their home in Tekoa.
She opened the ration office in Tekoa during World War II, and operated it for one year before joining Dave in Texas, Arizona, California and Tennessee during the war.
Returning to Tekoa, Eleanor worked at the post office and as a bookkeeper until opening a tax accounting business that she operated for over 45 years.
Her husband operated Tekoa Skyways, a crop dusting service.
He died in 1987.
She has been a resident at the Tekoa Care Center for the past few months.
Eleanor’s hobbies included her rose garden, playing bridge, golfing, sewing and picking huckleberries. She enjoyed traveling and had been around the world.
Survivors include her daughter, Judy Cohn of Tacoma; two step-granddaughters and one step-great-grandson. A step-grandson, Kyle Robinson preceded her in death.
Memorial gifts may be given to the Tekoa Ambulance Fund or to Goldenrod Cemetery in Tekoa.
Marie Schultheis
The rosary for Marie Irene Schultheis, 83, Uniontown, was said Monday, Sept. 14, at St. Boniface Catholic Church in Uniontown. Funeral mass was celebrated following the rosary with burial following at St. Boniface Cemetery in Uniontown.
Mrs. Schultheis died Sept. 7, 2009, at Gritman Medical Center in Moscow due to complications from Leukemia.
Born March 30, 1926, in Pierz, Minn., to Edward and Regina Terhaar Stumpf. she grew up and graduated from St. Francis High School in Little Falls, Minn., in 1942. Marie married Don Schultheis Sept. 6, 1951 following her graduation from Sacred Heart Nursing School. They lived in Alexandria, Va., from 1951-1953 where he was stationed in the Army and Marie worked as a registered nurse in an area hospital.
They moved to Spokane in 1953 and she worked at Sacred Heart Hospital. In 1962 they moved to a farm near Uniontown where they made their home since.
Marie continued to work as a registered nurse in Pullman while raising their family of seven children and helping on the farm. She loved gardening and always cared for a large vegetable garden. She was best known for raising flowers, and the making beautiful quilts. She enjoyed spending time visiting or playing cards with her many friends and family. Marie was a member of St. Boniface Catholic Church.
Surviving are her husband, Don, at the family home in Uniontown; daughters Kathy of Vancouver and Leanne of Auburn; sons Dave (Dorothy) of Spokane, Brian (Kathy) of Spokane, Tim (Linda) of Mead, Tom (Brenda) of Colton and Glenn (Peggy) of Colbert; three sisters, Irene Selinski of Little Falls, Minn .; Cora Cain of Ft. Collins, Colo .; Lavina Bonacci of Lakewood, Colo .; three brothers, Edward Stumpf of Little Falls, Minn; Herb Stumpf of Pierz, Minn., and Ernie Stumpf of Belle Plaine, Minn .; six grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
Memorials are suggested to the St. Boniface Catholic Church endowment fund. Online condolences:
Ruth E. Nirk
The funeral for Ruth E. Nirk, 85, was Monday, Sept. 14, at the Church of the Nazarene, Princeton, Idaho. Rev. King Rockhill officiated. Interment followed at the Freeze Cemetery north of Potlatch. Mrs. Nirk died last Wednesday, Sept. 9, 2009, at the Providence Sacred Heart Medical Center in Spokane.
Born Dec. 7, 1923, at Colfax, to Louis and Anna Suess Ringer, she attended Potlatch schools and graduated from Potlatch High School in 1942.
She married Gerald Nirk on Oct. 1, 1943, at Colfax and the couple made their home in North Carolina where he served in the military. After the war they moved back to Potlatch, where they have made their home since. He worked in the family sawmill and later for Central Pre–Mix in Moscow. Mr. Nirk died in 1998.
She was employed at Nirk Archery Co. for several years and later worked at the University of Idaho at the Satellite SUB until she retired in 1981.
Ruth enjoyed working in her yard, tending to her flowers and watching the birds that she fed. She also loved to watch the deer, moose and turkeys that surrounded their home.
Survivors include one daughter, Cathy Gabriel, Moscow; one brother, Bill Ringer, Moscow; two sisters, Betty Stewart, Clackamas, Ore .; Louise Bunn, Spokane; one grandson and two great-grandchildren.
