Pullman Civic Theater books ‘Tuna’ auditions

Pullman Civic Theatre’s production of “Greater Tuna” a political satire about rural America is portrayed by only two performers who will depict all the inhabitants of the town. For mature audiences only. Performances are Sept. 18, 19, 24, 25 and 26 at 7:30 p.m. and Sept. 20 at 2 p.m. at the Nye Street Theatre. Tickets are $12 advanced, $15 at the door. Ticket locations: Nye Street Theatre, Neils Flowers and Gifts, Wild Ivy, and Dissmore’s IGA.

Audition dates for PCT’s first reader’s theatre production of classic one-act plays, will be at the theater Sept. 29 and 30 at 7 p.m. Four men, four women and one narrator are needed for roles.

Performance dates will be Oct. 21 at Café Moro, Pullman, 7:30 p.m. and Oct. 24, Nye Street Theatre, Pullman, 7:30 p.m.

Fifth annual diaper drive underway

Donations of baby supplies and diapers can be taken to either Pullman or Colfax Community Action Center locations for the fifth annual baby diaper drive scheduled to run from now until Oct. 15. The diaper drive collects all sizes of diapers, baby food, formula, shampoo and wipes. These are items families often have to do without. They cannot be purchased under the food stamp program.

Cash donation envelopes can be picked up at participating businesses in Pullman and Colfax. Donations can be sent to: Baby Diaper Drive, Community Action Center, 350 SE Fairmont Rd, Pullman, WA, 99163.

Alice in Wonderland will play at Garfield

GarPal Players will present Alice in Wonderland at the Garfield School Theater, Saturday, Sept. 26, 7 p.m .; Sunday, Sept. 27, 4 p.m. and Saturday, Oct. 3, 7 p.m.

Advance tickets can be purchased from cast members. Seating is limited, but if pre-sale tickets don’t sell out they will be available at the door.

Adult tickets are $6, students $4. Youngsters five and under will be admitted free.

Shriners list winners

Whitman County Shriners Sunday drew winners of cash prizes in their benefit raffle. Winners included Joyce Appel of Dusty, $100; Jill Berg of Spokane, $75; Sophie Roemer of Sumner, $50; Myron Powers of Cheney and Pete Leonard of Rosalia, each $25.

The Shriners use proceeds from the drawing and from their concession booth sales to bid and purchase animals in the fair’s junior livestock sale. Approximately $4,000 was invested in animals in the sale this year.

Dahmen barn concerts

Hog Heaven Big Band returns to the Dahmen Barn in Uniontown Sept. 26 at 7:30 p.m. This 16 piece group has been playing on the Palouse for over 20 years.

Forgotten Freight will play at the Dahmen Barn in Uniontown Oct. 3 beginning at 7:30 p.m. Veteran bluegrass enthusiast Susan Firor plays upright bass; Lenny Johnson, banjo; Stuart Osborne, fiddle; J.D. Wulfhorst, dobro, and Tim Kinkeade rhythm guitar.

Blood drive next week

Colfax branch of Whitman County Library will host a community blood drive next Wednesday, Sept. 23, from 1 to 6 p.m. A mobile collection unit from the Inland Northwest Blood Center (INBC) will be on hand to screen applicants and accept donations.

Photo identification is required, and donors should drink plenty of fluids and eat a meal at least two hours prior to arrival. Donors under 18 must have an INBC permission form signed by a parent or guardian. The entire list of eligibility criteria is at the library or by contacting INBC:

Births

McGuire son born

A boy, Daniel Conner McGuire, was born Aug. 25, 2009, at Whitman Hospital and Medical Center in Colfax, to Shantyl Riley and Rob McGuire. Maternal grandparents are Nancy and Eric Nitz, Sandpoint. Paternal grandparents are Lee and Linda McGuire, Thornton. The baby joins brothers Anthony, Brandon and Conrad.

Thrifty Grandmothers

Since the last report, Colfax Thrifty Grandmothers have donated $200 to the Colfax Booster Club; $250 to a local fund-raiser for medical equipment; $250 to Relay for Life; $1,500 for swim tickets and $1,000 to the livestock supporters at the fair.

The Sept. 14 meeting was at the CETC Building for the last time with 15 members and one guest present. The October meeting will be at the Nazarene Church Hall.

A serious attempt is being made to clean up the alley behind the shop. A truck is going to the landfill today. Please don’t drop off non saleable or large items.

Third Thursday Club kicks off after school today, Thursday, Sept. 17. Kids in grades 1-4 are invited to this space themed program to be held on the main floor of the Colfax Library. Contact Jennings Elementary for bus information to transport students directly to the library.

Give the gift of life by donating blood Sept. 23 from 1-6 p.m. Walk-ins are welcome. To schedule an appointment, call the library.

Little ones are invited to Library Pajama Night Sept. 30 at 7 p.m. in the children’s room.

A new book, Exploring Washington’s Backroads, Highways and Hometowns of the Evergreen State by John Deviny takes readers off the beaten path. The author mentions local destinations such as Ewan, Winona, Rock Lake and Endicott.
