Colfax girls sweep Okanogan tournament

Colfax girls ran a string of eight games Saturday to sweep the Okanogan tournament. The run ended with a two-game win over a big Lynden Christian team in the championship game.

“They were a typical Lynden Christian team, tall and athletic, and we had to come from behind in both games,” Coach Sue Doering said.

Colfax went up against LC after taking out Okanogan and Ephrata in two pool games in the tourney’s best-of-three format.

The pool wins put them up against Zillah in the semi round, a crossover matchup between the first and second-place teams out of each pool.

Colton took Zillah 25-11 and 25-17 to advance to the title game against Lynden Christian. Score for the win over LC was 25-17 and 27-25.

Lynden broke to a 16-12 lead in the first game before Brooke Webber ran seven straight serve points to put Colfax in front. She hit three aces, and LC came up with an error on another Webber serve.

Kayla Johnson, who finished with 74 kills for the tourney run, hit two as the Bulldogs closed in on the first game, and Rachel Johnson served it out.

In the second game, Colfax was in a 15-21 hole and battled back. Webber served them back to 19-21 with a pair of aces.

Lynden came back at Colfax 23-19 before Rachel Johnson came to the line and tied it up at 23-23. Kayla Johnson booked four late kills and Rachel hit an ace.

The game went to 25-25 before another K Johnson ace and an error by Lynden ended it at 27-25 to finish out the Colfax sweep.

Scores for the two pool wins were 25-12 26-19 over the host Okanogan club and 25-15 25-9 over Ephrata.

Tuesday back on their home court the Bulldogs dominated Valley Christian in three games, 25-11 25-8 and 25-17.
