Tigercats, Wildcats drop opponents from Oregon

Colton's Holden Druffel puts the stop on Joseph's BJ Warnock early in the high scoring Kibbie Dome game Friday night in Moscow.

Friday turned out to be a rough night for Oregon eight-man teams in non-league action with Whitman County foes. Colton’s Wildcats ran wild in the Kibbie Dome Friday night to drop Joseph 89-54, a lot of points even for a high school basketball game.

LaCrosse/Washtucna/Kahlotus headed south of the border to play at Echo, Ore., and returned with a 46-8 win to run their record to 3-0.

COLTON and the Joseph Eagles faced off in the Kibbie Dome the night before the remodeled UI dome made its debut for an Idaho game.

The Wildcats ran up 32 points in the first quarter to stake out a lead on the way to the big win.

“They just couldn’t stop our speed on that surface,” Coach Clark Vining said.

Colton coaches started activating the bench before the end of the quarter.

Sam Robertson rolled up 370 yards rushing and scored seven TDs. Robinson’s second TD went for 99 yards, He also added an 80 yard kickoff return.

Joseph last year traveled to Colton and ground down the Wildcats for a win. The Eagles went all the way to the Oregon eight-man finals last year but lost to Imler.

“They graduated a lot of players from last year. They still had some pretty big players this year, but we just had the speed,” Coach Vining commented.

The Wildcats Friday will host the SJE Eagles who will arrive after a win over Garfield/Palouse in a pickup game.

“They’re an experienced team, and they’re pretty big,” Vining noted.

He said one of the keys for Colton will be to stop the Eagles power game and keep down their possession time.

LWK Tigercats moved their mark to 3-0 with a big win at Echo. Coach Jeff Nelson said the defense was the key factor in the 46-8 win.

“They like to run a triple option offense, and we shut that down and took them out of their game,” Nelson commented. The hosts opted to go to the air and booked an uneven game for the balance.

Echo finished with 97 rushing yards and a 4-12-71 passing game.

Gary Marmes led the LWK defense with seven tackles, and Chris Wargo and Garrett Blauert had six tackles each. Blauert also picked off an interception. Justin Aldrich had five tackles.

LWK actually stacked a 46-0 lead, but Oregon’s version of the 45-point rule calls for the teams to continue with a non-stop clock.

Blauert booked an 18-152 night and scored three TDs. Garrett Whitney was 13-92 with two TDs and Aldrich scored on a 56-yard run.

Freshman Sam Harder started at QB for an ailing Jake Aune and finished 6-6- for 121 yards and a 21-yard TD shot to Jeff Zimmer.

The Tigercats will host Valley Christian, an unknown entity, Friday night at Washtucna for the homecoming game.

Coach Nelson said the Tigercats plan to put their offense in full gear against VC, build up a lead and then adjust their defense when they get an idea of what the VC guests will do on offense.
